Worst NCAA Football Teams Against the Spread

NCAA football bettors love winners, no matter how they match up against the spread. That’s why #1-ranked Alabama and #3 Oregon are both 9-0 SU but just 5-4 ATS. But, there are worse teams against the spread – much worse. Since I’m here to make money rather than bet on my favorite teams, I don’t care who I’m betting on (or against).

If you’re interested in breaking away from the betting public, you’ll want to lower your standards and check out the major betting values provided by two of college football’s absolute worst ATS teams.

Colorado Buffaloes (1-8, 1-8 ATS): ATS HELL

The Colorado Buffaloes are struggling through what could be the worst season in school history, and sportsbooks are struggling to keep up. Week after week the hapless Buffs take the field with almost nothing in the way of offense or defense, allowing opponents free reign to score as they please.

How bad are things in beautiful Boulder? Over the course of their eight losses, opponents are enjoying an average margin of victory that’s right around 34 points. Last week the Stanford Cardinal shut out Colorado at Folsom Field 48-0.

In the five games since their sole win (a 35-34 nail-biter on the road against Washington State), Colorado has been outscored 261-51. That means opponents are seeing the end zone five times as often the Buffs.

While none of these numbers bode well for CU head coach Jon Embree, they’re great news for bettors. In fact, betting against Colorado is proving to be one of the safest bets in all of sports. Why aren’t you going after this value?

I normally caution against betting the favorite when the line starts getting out of the 20’s, but Colorado is a rare exception to the rule. Just look at how they played against the Ducks two weeks ago. As +47 point dogs, the Buffs rolled over and lost 70-14. By halftime the score was 56-0. The high-powered, but merciful Oregon offense could easily have broken 100 points if they’d been inclined.

This is a terrible team that no one is betting on, or against, and that’s pure value for smart money.

Idaho Vandals (1-8, 1-8 ATS)

Sharp bettors have long plumbed the depths of the WAC for college football betting value and come up with money in their hands. That’s why the 1-8 Idaho Vandals are a team worth watching. Well, they aren’t worth watching, but they’re worth betting against.

Whether the line is sky high or razor thin, this is a team that simply can’t cover.

Idaho’s sole SU victory came three weeks ago against the nearly-as-bad New Mexico State Aggies (1-8, 4-5 ATS), and was the sole high point of their season. In that game, the Vandals put up decisive 26-18 victory over a team whose opponents enjoy an average margin of victory that clocks in at around 20.6 points/game. It’s all been downhill since then.

Last week, Idaho hosted the San Jose State Spartans (7-2, 7-2 ATS) in a game that nicely illustrates the team’s total inability to exploit opportunities. Common football wisdom has long held that the team that wins the turnover battle, wins the game. So why did the the Vandals drop this matchup 42-13, despite forcing four SJ turnovers? It’s probably because their offense never really got into the game.

In fact, since losing starting QB Dominique Blackman because of disciplinary reasons earlier in the season, the Vandals have struggled seriously on that side of the ball. Right now they’re only averaging 15.7 points/game. That’s not how you win games in college football, even in the WAC.

Defensively, things aren’t much better for Idaho. Opponents regularly wallop them, scoring an average of 43 points/game. Opponents have already scored 40 or more points on the Vandals.

Not surprisingly, Idaho is well below the average bettor’s radar. That means the line on Vandals’ games stays pretty stable throughout. Let’s face it, when it comes to finding those value-packed lines, sharp bettors like staying away from the crowd.

Idaho losses aren’t quite as epic as Colorado losses, but they’re every bit as consistent. This team is the college football equivalent of a rudderless ship, but betting against them is a statistically sound move.
