West Virginia vs Texas Betting Lines

What: #8 West Virginia Mountaineers vs #11 Texas Longhorns NCAA Football
When: 7:00pm EST. Saturday, October 6, 2012
Where: Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Austin, TX.

Last week, handicappers who took the under were severely disappointed when #8 West Virginia (4-0, 1-3 ATS) and #25 Baylor rang up a total of 133 points. That Big 12 shootout made the 77 combined points put up by Texas (4-0, 3-1 ATS) and Oklahoma State seem pretty tame in comparison.

This week, the Texas Longhorns and West Virginia Mountaineers are squaring off in Austin for a game that’s going to see plenty of over/under action. At the time this article is being written, the total is 73.5 at BetOnline.com.

Below are the WVU vs. Texas betting lines as of Friday morning at 6:00am EST. For the latest lines, use either of the links in the table below. I recommend BetOnline for straight bets, and Bovada for live betting. Both accept U.S. bettors, Visa for funding accounts, and offer betting for all of the most popular smartphones & tablets.

The handle on this game is going to be huge, moving the lines and creating some nice betting opportunities. Let’s take a closer look at this matchup and make some predictions.

West Virginia Mountaineers

The undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers had an amazing offensive game against Baylor last week, a storyline that is unlikely to be repeated this week. QB Geno Smith completed 45-51 passes for 656 yards, 8 TD’s and no INT’s. Smith has thrown 20 TD’s on the season, without a single interception. Add to that a completion percentage of 83.4% and you’ve got a recipe for causing mass destruction.

While no one is questioning WVU’s awesome offense, there’s plenty of questions that can be asked about their defense, like, “where were they?” Their absence allowed Baylor to put up 700 yards of offense, while only turning the ball over once. Moreover, the Mountaineers had almost no luck on stopping the Bears on third downs, where Baylor was able to convert 11 of 16 chances. The Longhorns are considerably better than Baylor, so another defensive downer like this one could spell bad news for WVU.

High drama games like Baylor/West Virginia tend to sap teams emotionally, and this could be a real problem for the Mountaineers this week. Unless they’ve got their heads together, a letdown is very possible.

Texas Longhorns

Texas quarterbacks are generally considered to be amongst college football’s elite, and David Ash (85-109, 1007 yards, 10 TD’s, 1 INT, 4 sacks) seems to fit that bill. He’s performed well under pressure this season, but has yet to face anyone of West Virginia’s caliber. Still, last week he had three first quarter TD’s against the Oklahoma State Cowboys which is not easy to do in hostile Stillwater.

As impressive as his scoring efforts were, going 3-3 on fourth down conversions, on the road, might be even more impressive.

Defensively however, Texas has some issues. The Cowboys were able to put up 576 yards of total offensive on them, with a time of possession of only 23:24. That implies a defense that was seriously out-hustled.

Oklahoma State is not a ranked team, but they play like one and should’ve been excellent preparation for this week’s duel with the Mountaineers.

West Virginia vs. Texas Betting Picks

This is the first time the Longhorns and Mountaineers have met up since 1956, so anything could happen. But, huge games like these teams had last week don’t happen all that often. That’s what defensive coordinators are for. Still, this should be a close game between two very talented football teams.

West Virginia vs Texas Point Spread Pick

As of Friday morning, Texas is favored by -6.5 (-115) at BetOnline, and -7 (-105) at Bovada. I think the Longhorns have a slight edge, but this could be very close all the way to the end of the game. West Virginia is 1-3 against the spread this season, while Texas is 3-1 ATS right now.

Even though they’re on the road, and even considering the ATS records this season, I still like West Virginia and the points. The WVU offense has the ability to pop off a couple of late TD’s to help them cover or win SU. Although I like the Texas home-field advantage and their record against the spread, I don’t want to give up the points against Geno Smith. Every bet we make is a gamble, but I prefer to gamble on a guy who completes over 83% of his passes and doesn’t throw interceptions….seemingly ever.

I’m going against the grain in this one, taking West Virginia on the point spread of -6.5 (-105) at BetOnline.com. I think they can keep this to a 3-4 point game, if not take it straight-up. So, I’m taking the risk, giving up half of a point for an extra dime at Bovada. If you prefer getting 7 points, you can get it -115 at Bovada.lv.

As I mentioned above, you can get Texas -6.5 (-115) at BetOnline, or -7 (-105) at Bovada.

WVU @ Texas Money Line Pick

At the time I’m writing this, the WVU money line is +220 at BetOnline, and Texas is -260. I don’t like the Texas money line because I think WVU has too good of a chance in this one.

I’m not that confident WVU will win this straight up, so I’m sticking to my bet on the spread and taking the points. Unless West Virginia gets into +250 or better territory, I’m not seeing enough value to take them on the money line. We’re close, but not quite there yet. If they get into this range (I don’t expect it to happen), I’ll place 1/2 unit on the WVU money line.

West Virginia vs Texas Over/Under Pick

The WVU vs. Texas over/under opened at 79 points, and has come down to 73.5 since then. Smart money has been taking the under, and I think 73.5 may be as low as we see it.

Lost in the excitement of last week’s shootouts were some pretty dismal defensive performances. While the fans may have overlooked this problem, the coaching staffs at Texas and West Virginia surely haven’t. Expect both defensive units to step it up considerably, making this a lower scoring affair than your bar buddies are claiming it will be.

With all of this said, we’ve come down 5.5 points since the total opened, and I recommend waiting until (at least) late Friday before placing a bet. Let’s see what after-work bettors do on Friday before picking a side. If the over/under gets into the 72 – 72.5 range, I’ll be taking the over. If the public bets it back up to 74+, I’ll take the under.
