Washington vs LSU Betting Lines

What: Washington Huskies vs #3 LSU Tigers NCAA Football
When: 7:00 pm EST. Saturday, September 8, 2012
Where: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA

The #3 LSU Tigers (1-0, 0-1 ATS) are sitting in a pretty sweet spot as they welcome the Washington Huskies (1-0, 0-1 ATS) to Louisiana on Saturday. The Huskies are already banged up and struggled mightily against San Diego State in week one. Throw in a home field advantage and it looks like a situation that point spread and over/under bettors can really sink their teeth into.

This is a challenging game to handicap for a couple of reasons. First, Washington is a team that doesn’t get much love from the public, but LSU does. We love big time SEC teams and always like their chances of an outright win, but the Washington vs. LSU point spread could be a little high. The spread opened at 22 and has climbed to 24 at the time of this writing, Thursday night. With two more days until game time and public money coming in, we could see the spread rise another 1/2 – 1 point before the game begins.

On the other hand, Washington didn’t look good against San Diego State, and #3 LSU is likely to run up the score. You think they like being #3? I don’t, and we have the potential for a blowout here. It comes down to how the public see’s this game over the next 48 hours, and getting in at the right time. Let’s get into some more of the details.

LSU Tigers

Last season the Tigers played one of the toughest schedules in recent memory and knocked off eight ranked teams during their undefeated regular season. This season the bar is set a little lower and so far, they’re only looking at four ranked opponents.

Last week they put up a solid 41-14 win over the North Texas Green Machine but they couldn’t cover that sky-high -42 point line. Like we already said, the public loves piling on the Tiger, driving some of their lines way beyond reason. Right now they’re -24 point favorites, but that might be asking for too much.

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger (19-26, 192 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) didn’t exactly dazzle in his season debut, but he got the job done. Besides, most the action for this team takes place on the ground. College football bettors should note that he was briefly sidelined after a big hit and had similar troubles in practice over the summer. He is, sadly, a big injury waiting to happen.

The LSU Tigers rushed for 316 yards and sophomore Kenny Hilliard ran 13 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He was joined in the 100+ club by junior Alfred Blue, who carried 16 times for 123 yards. Look for LSU to run & run again, which will eat up the clock and keep the ball away from the Washington offense.

Washington Huskies

The Washington Huskies are one of those teams that’s perpetually on the verge of being really good. Last season then-sophomore quarterback Keith Price went 242-362, for 3063 yds, 33 TD’s and 11 INT’s. Though his achievements were overshadowed by Andrew Luck and other college QB’s, he had a very good year. Against SDSU last week, he completed 25-35 for 222 yards and a TD.

Defensively, the Huskies forced three turnovers but allowed the Aztecs to go 2-3 on 4th down conversion attempts. The Huskies were using a new defensive scheme for the first time and it was a big improvement over last season.

Washington vs LSU Point Spread Pick

Handicappers looking to bet on the Washington vs. LSU point spread have a tough decision to make. At -24 points, we’ll still go with LSU thanks to that vaunted Tiger defense and the perils of playing in Baton Rouge. But if this gets any higher, we’d recommend putting your money somewhere else, or placing a small bet on Washington if you’re getting +24.5 or better. Watch this line move as we get closer to game time and see watch the direction of the point spread.

Money Line Pick

Money line bettors have a pretty safe play going with LSU, but have to pay -2000 for it. Washington is 1-9 in road openers and was 0-4 SU and ATS against ranked teams last season. The problem here is value, so we’ll be staying away from the Washington/LSU money line. If anything, add it to a money line parlay for additional value.

Over/Under Pick

Our Washington vs. LSU over/under pick is currently 53 (-110). LSU has a high powered defense that should smother the Huskies, while giving their offense plenty of opportunities to visit the end zone. We may not need Washington to score more than 7-10 points, so we’re going with the over.
