There’s going to be plenty of Cougar-on-Cougar action this week when the BYU Cougars face off against the Washington State Cougars in Provo for both teams’ season opener. It’s definitely a rebuilding year for Washington State, but BYU is bringing a host of experienced players to the field and has a great shot at getting their season off on the right foot.

Washington State in Transition

Last season the Washington State Cougars (4-8, 7-5 ATS) played great against lousy opponents, so-so against average opponents, and terribly against good opponents.  They flew low enough under the radar that bettors were able to catch some value when they played nobodies and some underdog value when they faced off against big boys like Oregon.

We like the fact that they’re bringing back a lot of their top players from last season like WR Marquess Wilson (82 rec, 1388 yds, 12 TDs). Also returning are QB’s Connor Wilson (5-103, 963 yds, 9 TDs, 4 INT) and Jeff Tuel (29-45, 276 yds, 1 TD).

Injuries devastated the Wash St. Cougars last year, so expect Tuel to hit it hard in his last year with the program.

These guys are part of a maturing Wash St. team that should do well under former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. But their time is not now.

BYU Ready for Week One

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall is coming into his eighth season in Provo with an impressive 66-24 record, 36-7 when playing at home. He’s an experienced coach with a sideline full of experienced players and should have little trouble handling Wash St.

Mendenhall’s got a solid veteran QB in senior Riley Nelson (116-202, 1717 yds, 19 TDs, 7 INT) and should have little problem putting up points against Washington State. We’re expecting to see Nelson tightening up his game this season and maybe getting a little more help from the O-line so he’s not sacked 13 times like he was last year.

The BYU Cougars saw plenty of heartbreaking, frustrating losses last season and are looking for something more this year. They’re not going to light up the national picture, but they’ll definitely win at least 10 games, including this one.

There’s a basic sports betting rule that says always bet against a new coach in his first road game and that one applies pretty well to this situation. Leach is definitely a top caliber coach with an 84-43 lifetime record, but Wash St. is still in need of a lot of work.

The fact that this line is sitting at -12.5 suggests a game that’s just not getting much attention and that’s exactly the kind we like recommending. BYU plays well at home and isn’t shy about piling points on lesser opponents. Despite their bright future, the Washington State Cougars fall into that lesser opponent category.

BYU is a clear cut choice in this game and at -12.5, we suggest you get on the point spread right away. On the money line, -460 is too big of a risk for game of the year. Although we clearly like BYU in this matchup, we’d be more inclined to bet the money line if both teams has 3-4 games under their belts.

For the WSU vs BYU over/under, 65.5 is high. Early in the season, defenses tend to be more solid than offenses. This makes it harder to take the over. We’re taking the under of 65.5 (-110).
