Friday’s 2015 Indian Premier League clash in the capital sees two teams eager to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive.

Delhi Daredevils were looking solid leading into their match with Royal Challengers Bangalore last Sunday, having put together three wins in their last four fixtures.

All that good work was undone in brutal fashion, however, as Mitchell Starc and Co. rolled them for just 95 before Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli eased RCB to an emphatic 10-wicket win.

The most humiliating stat from that innings is not that Mayank Agarwal, JP Duminy and Kedar Jadhav were the only players to reach double figures, but that the next highest contributor was Bangalore with six wides.

Maybe you can chalk that up to an aberration, or the fact they were up against the best Twenty20 and ODI bowler in the world right now in Starc, but one can’t ignore the obvious pattern that has emerged for Delhi with the ball in hand.

For while Imran Tahir ranks among IPL 2015’s very best performers with 13 wickets in seven games, the Daredevils have relied far too heavily on the South African leg spinner to get the job done.

Indeed, their next most deadly bowler is part-timer Duminy, whose 10 overs in total have yielded seven victims. That record shames the likes of Nathan Coulter-Nile, Domnic Muthuswami, Amit Mishra and Angelo Mathews, all of whom are striking at worse than one wicket every 20 balls.

With only three wickets in his last six outings, Coulter-Nile in particular will need to lift on a home pitch that usually offers something for hard-hitting seamers.

Coach Gary Kirsten will also be desperate for some kind of return on the franchise’s investment in Yuvraj Singh, who has contributed precious little with either bat or ball since his big-money move to the Kotla.

The visitors, meanwhile, will see Friday’s trip to the capital as a real opportunity to drag themselves off the bottom of the Indian Premier League table.

Kings XI Punjab have lost four of their last five fixtures, their only win in that period coming courtesy of Shaun Marsh’s Super Over heroics against Rajasthan Royals.

The West Australian left-hander could not repeat those efforts on Monday, however, as he and the rest of the Punjabi top order crumbled while chasing a very gettable 151 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

That lack of stability early in the innings has cost KXIP on more than one occasion this season, leading to Virender Sehwag’s exclusion after a combined tally of 14 runs in his last three knocks.

Young Manan Vohra fared little better when stepping into Viru’s shoes against Hyderabad, however, so it remains to be seen whether the local lad will get another run.

Captain George Bailey would also like to see a few more half-century conversions in the middle order, as the likes of David Miller and Wriddhiman Saha have been dangerous without putting up any seriously big numbers.

Still, most online bookmakers have Punjab as clear favourites to down the Daredevils, largely on the basis of an evenly spread bowling attack.

Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Axar Patel and Mitchell Johnson have claimed 36 scalps between them, with only two wickets separating top striker Singh (10) from Australian firebrand Johnson (eight).

The problem for head coach Sanjay Bangar is finding a fifth bowler who can make an impact, as none of Murali Vijay, Karanveen Singh and Rishi Dhawan have managed to jag a wicket.

Nor has IPL 2014’s Most Valuable Player, Glenn Maxwell. The Aussie slogger now finds himself on the outer in Pune after managing just 62 runs in five games, along with two overs at an economy rate of 12.5.

Nevertheless, the Kings XI attack has impressed at either end of the innings – a point Bailey made note of after the defeat to Sunrisers.

“The bowling was good to restrict them to 150,” the Tasmanian said post-match on Monday.

“We are just trying to get a combination that works. I think no team are trying any harder than last year and we are not trying any lesser.

“Sandeep [Sharma] and Anureet [Singh] have been performing for us at the start as well as the death, which is good to see.”

Match predictions

Result – Delhi Daredevils ($2.20 at www.Bet365.com)
Highest opening partnership – Delhi Daredevils ($1.90 at CrownBet)
Most match sixes – Kings XI Punjab ($1.88 at CrownBet)

Expect this one to be much tighter than the leading online sports books are predicting. Agarwal and Iyer look a slightly more stable opening pair than their Kings XI counterparts, but one can’t underestimate the middle-order firepower of Bailey, Miller and Saha for the away side. On a home track where the IPL’s best spinner has had plenty of joy this season, Daredevils seem a solid value bet at $2.20.

IPL T20 top batsman odds

Delhi Daredevils – JP Duminy ($4.00 at Bet365.com)

The Delhi skipper has emerged as one of the more reliable performers in Twenty20 cricket over the last two years, and he’s carried that form into IPL 2015. Also have a look at 20-year-old SS Iyer ($4.00), who leads the Daredevils’ runscoring charts.

Kings XI Punjab – Shaun Marsh ($3.75 at CrownBet)

Famously inconsistent but devastating on his day, the Aussie lefty is the best bet in the Punjab top order. With meaningful early partnerships proving hard to come by for Kings XI, however, you might also want to consider Bailey ($6.20) and Miller ($5.80) lower down the list.

Best IPL value bets for top bowler

Delhi Daredevils – Imran Tahir ($3.60 at Bet365)

He’s the obvious choice, but for good reason. Tahir has taken eight wickets in four games at the Kotla in 2015, and that includes Delhi’s nightmare against RCB last time out. He has form against Kings XI, too, having snared three wickets last time these two teams met.

Kings XI Punjab – Sandeep Sharma ($4.00 at www.Bet365.com)

He may not have the explosive pace of Johnson (also $4.00), but Sharma more than makes up for that through sheer consistency. He has gone wicketless just once in IPL 2015 so far, while best figures of 4 for 25 against Kolkata Knight Riders show he is capable of a big day out.
