USC vs. Syracuse Betting Lines

What: #2 USC Trojans vs Syracuse Orange: NCAA Football
When: Saturday, September 8, 2012, 3:30 EST
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

The #2 USC Trojans (1-0, 0-1 ATS) opened their season with a big 49-10 win over the Hawaii Warriors. This week, they shouldn’t have any problems putting up another SU win against the Syracuse Orange (0-1, 0-1 ATS). Syracuse looked good in their opener against Northwestern (1-0, 1-0 ATS), but lost it 42-41 nonetheless. The big question for sports bettors is whether or not the Orange can put up points on the Trojans close to what they did against the Wildcats. Nobody is expecting them to put up 41 this week, but how effective can they be?

Syracuse in a Tough Spot

NCAA football bettors have got to like the way Syracuse played last week, despite the loss. Quarterback Ryan Nassib completed 44-65 for 470 yards, four touchdowns and a single interception. Remember, he also hit all four of those TD passes in the second half. If Nassib plays anywhere near as well this week (and for the entire game), he could have a relatively good day against USC.

In the first half, the Syracuse Orange struggled offensively, putting up a pair of field goals and a single Prince-Tyson Gulley touchdown. They also turned over the ball on three separate occasions and racked up 72 yards of penalties on 12 different plays.

That kind of play keeps you in games against the likes of Northwestern and their second string quarterback, but it’s not going to take down the #2 ranked team in the country. With that said, their performance in the second half last week gives us confidence to bet the 59-point over. USC should do their job in this department, and with a little luck, Syracuse could do their part as well.

USC Delivering as Expected

Matt Barkley and the rest of the USC team made their fans happy last week, but anyone who bet on them to cover the point spread came out a loser. Even though Barkley was 23-38 for 372 yards and four touchdowns, they came four points shy of covering the spread. Barkley hit sophomore wide receiver Marqise Lee 10 times for a total of 197 yards and a touchdown. He also hit WR Robert Woods for 2 TD’s and TE Randall Telfer for one more. Marqise Lee added a 100-yard kickoff return for a TD, and RB Silas Redd had the only rushing TD for USC.

Defensively, the Trojans were rock solid against the outclassed Warriors. They forced four turnovers and held Hawaii to just 56 yards rushing.

Despite their 49-10 win last week, USC drops to the #2 ranking. If anything, this might help to make the USC betting lines more realistic. Last week’s spread of 42 points and over/under of 63 were the result of a public that’s drinking too much USC Kool-Aid. This week’s point spread and over/under totals are much more realistic.

USC vs Syracuse Betting Picks

When USC and Syracuse met up last year, the Trojans had yet to hit their stride but won the game 38-17 nonetheless. We don’t expect this year’s game to be quite that close. Remember, the Orange finished last season 5-7 (3-9 ATS), and USC should be better this year.

USC. vs Syracuse Point Spread – Free Pick

Despite the neutral location, this will still be something of a home game for Syracuse, which should help to keep things from getting too out of hand. Still, asking the #2 team in the country to give up 27 points to Syracuse is pretty reasonable. Don’t forget that teams in the running for the BCS title aren’t shy about running up scores.

We took Hawaii to cover the spread last week, and we won that bet. This week we’re taking USC to cover the 27, but don’t wait too long, because at 28 or 29 USC becomes less & less attractive. We’re taking USC on the point spread -27 (-110) at BetOnline.com.

Money Line & Pick

For the USC vs. Syracuse money line, this should be another easy win. The only problem is, most books have yet to post their money lines for this game. There won’t be much value in a moneyline bet, but this game should be a lock and a few bucks could be made if you don’t mind the very slight risk.

Over/Under Odds & Pick

Given Syracuse’s ability to move the ball and put up points last week, I expect Syracuse to get in the end zone against USC. USC won’t have any problems in this area either, so we expecting a high scoring affair. For the USC vs. Syracuse over/under, we’re taking the over of 59 (-110) at BetOnline.

Colin Cowherd on USC Dropping from #1 to #2 in the NCAA Football Rankings

In this video from his ESPN radio show, Colin Cowherd makes some good points about why a team ranked #1 should drop in rankings even after a big win. He relates ranking to dating, and although it’s a bit silly, he gets the point across. In this case, Alabama whooped a ranked team in Michigan, while USC played a weak Hawaii team. USC fans are hard-up for some ass-kicking this year, so it’s understandable some people might be upset. However, I’m a huge USC fan also, and using a level head about it, it makes sense that Alabama gets the nod. You gotta earn that #1 spot – you don’t get respect for beating up your little brother.
