When:Thursday, August 30, 7 P.M. EST
Where:Akron, Ohio
Point Spread Betting Line:UCF Knight -23.5 vs Akron Zips +23.5
Moneyline Odds:UCF (-110) vs Akron (-110)

UCF Set for Big Season
Last year the UCF Knights wen just 5-7 (5-7 ATS) but were nothing like a sub-500 team. In fact, all but one of those losses was by a touchdown or less; and two were lost by just three points. That’s a team that’s clearly on the cusp. When you look at the SU record matching the ATS record exactly, you’ve got some real value on your hands. UCF is not a team that the betting public is really watching.

The Knights are bringing back a whopping 16 starters this season, including sophomore quarterback Blake Bortles (75-110, 958 yds, 6 TDs, 3 INT). Bortles is stepping in for former starting QB Jeff Godfrey who will starting as a wide receiver. Bortles saw plenty of action as freshman and is maturing rapidly as a player.

Defensively they’ve got plenty of returning starters who proved themselves very worthy last season. Recall that in 2012, the Knights defense held five opponents to two touchdowns or less.

Zips in Rebuilding Mode

How bad did the Zips look last year? Try 1-11 (4-8 ATS), -177 yds per game bad. They lost seven games by 30 or more points. Not surprisingly, they’ve got a new head coach, Terry Bowden, as well as a defensive coordinator, Chuck Amato, to attempt to restore some order. This is a textbook rebuilding season and expectations are very low.

Akron’s starting QB Dalton Williams is a senior transfer from Stephen F. Austin University is clearly not the the future of the program, but should provide some much needed maturity to the struggling Zips. This is a program that’s going to need a few more years before they’ve got a realistic hope of competing.

Handicapping UCF v Akron

UCF is a program that’s currently sitting on the cusp of greatness. They’ve got the experience, the coaching and lot of returning players. Having that many close wins in a season is serious motivation and keeps the players focused on each weeks’ game. Just consider for a moment that the only difference between their 5-7 season and an 11-1 season were just six big plays. That’s something the Zips just don’t have yet.

While Terry Bowden is definitely the guy to turn Akron around, he’s not going to do it with Williams at the wheel. UCF giving 23.5 to Akron is asking a lot, but they’re set to deliver big time. The Zips just don’t have the tools to compete in this one.

Given the low profile of this game, don’t expect to see a lot of line movement until mid-week. So get in on UCF at -23.5 before the action gets heavy.
