Texans vs. Jets Betting Lines

What: Houston Texans vs. New York Jets: Week 5 Monday Night Football
When: 8:30pm EST. Monday, October 8, 2012
Where: MetLife Stadium

The week 5 Monday Night Football game is between two teams going in opposite directions. The Houston Texans (4-0, 4-0 ATS) are on the road to play the flailing New York Jets (2-2, 2-2 ATS), in a game where everyone is predicting an easy SU win for the Texans.

The Texans are one of only two undefeated teams left in 2012, and they rank 3rd in the league at +70 net points. They could move into #1 in that category tonight, as the two teams ahead of them have already played their fifth game. The Jets are -28 in net points, and come into the game with the 28th ranked offense. This could get ugly.

Lets take a look at the latest Texans vs. Jets betting lines for week 5 MNF.

Latest Houston vs. NY Betting Lines: Week 5 MNF

This game opened with the Texans favored by -7 on the point spread, and has moved to -9 as of Monday morning. This doesn’t surprise me, as the Texans have been great this year, and the Jets…not so much. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go to -9.5, but I think that’s as far as the spread will move. Anyone looking to wager on the Texans should probably get their bets in now, as I think their current betting lines are as good as they’ll get (from now until game time).

BetOnline.com posts earlier betting lines than Bovada.lv, which means it’s easier to find value early in the week. Bovada.lv has great live betting though, so it’s a fun place for casual bettors looking to add some fun to a game (with live bets starting at only $1). For value however, Bovada’s late betting lines (especially late money line & over/under odds), don’t provide bettors with a lot of opportunity.

Houston Texans

Best Texans Point Spread: -9 (+100) at BetOnline.com
Best Texans Money Line: -380 at BetOnline.com

The Houston Texans are coming off of a 38-14 week 4 win against the Titans, making the most of every opportunity. Danieal Manning and Kareem Jackson each returned interceptions for TD’s, while Matt Schaub threw two more and Arian Foster got one on the ground. The Texans also recorded just one penalty for 3 yards, with no INT’s or fumbles. When you’re getting touchdowns from offense and defense, not giving up turnovers, and not recording penalties, you’re going to win a lot of football games.

On the season, the Texans defense rank 3rd in yards per game (273). Their passing defense ranks 3rd (182.8 YPG), and they rank #1 allowing a league-low 52.9% completion percentage. Their rushing defense is stout as well, ranking #10 in rushing yards allowed per game (90.2 RYPG). More importantly, the defense has given up 0 rushing TD’s, caused 4 fumbles, and sacked opposing quarterbacks 13 times. This amounts to a Texans defense that is tied for 2nd in the league, giving up just 14 points per game. With a defense like this, who needs an offense?

While the Texans offense only ranks #15 in total yards per game, that doesn’t tell the whole story. The Texans have only fumbled once this year, and Schaub has only thrown one interception. A big part of this is due to the Texan’s O-line, who’s protected their QB, giving up just 3 sacks on the year. Although Arian Foster has been averaging an unimpressive 3.7 yards per carry, he has yet to fumble the ball in 2012. The team is also +7 on turnovers after just four games. Although the Texans aren’t spectacular on offense, they do not beat themselves.

Heading into this week 5 MNF matchup, QB Matt Schaub is 83/124 (66.9%), for 953 yards, 7 touchdowns and 1 INT. TE Owen Daniels and WR Andre Johnson have been his most consistent targets, combining for 35 receptions, 500 yards, and 4 TD’s.

Considering the dominance of the Houston Texans defense, combined with an effective and efficient offense, it’s no wonder the point spread has been climbing the last few days.

New York Jets

Best Jets Point Spread: +9 (-110) at Bovada.lv
Best Jets Money Line: +320 at BetOnline.com

The New York Jets come into this game looking worse than their 2-2 record. They were hammered by the 49ers in week four, losing 34-0 in NY. QB Mark Sanchez didn’t look good, going 13/29 for a paltry 103 passing yards, 0 TD’s and 1 INT.

The 49ers offense was on the field nearly 14 minutes longer than the Jets offense. In the 23:04 the Jets offense was on the field, they recorded just 45 rushing yards on 17 attempts, and just one rushing first down. One. For the day, NY only managed 9 first downs.

Before I bother going down this road any further, we all get the idea. The Jets were flat-out dominated, and they’re in serious trouble against the Texans. The Jets offense ranks 28th in total yards (284 YPG), 25th with just 86.5 rushing yards per game, 28th with 197.5 passing yards per game, and 21st in points scored (20.2 points per game). I could go on, but what’s the point?

The Jets defense isn’t much better than the offense, ranking 22nd in points allowed (27.2 points per game), and 20th in yards per game (370.2). Not being a fan of either team, I’m totally unbiased. But, there just isn’t much good to talk about here.

Texans/Jets Point Spread Prediction

Although this is a home game for the Jets, so was the shellacking they took against the 49ers last week. This Texans team is very comparable to the 49ers on both sides of the ball, close enough that Jets fans need to worry about another ass-whooping this week. While nobody expects the Jets to get beaten as badly as they did last week (surely they’ve made some changes right?), a point spread of -9 for the Texans looks good enough to eat. They should win by at least nine, and I think there’s more upside to a huge blowout than there is a to a close game. This game shouldn’t be close, and I’m predicting the Texans to cover the spread. They’re 4-0 ATS this year, and 2-0 ATS on the road. After the recent performances of both of these teams, I can’t see any reason to go against the Texans in this one.

Texans Point Spread

If you like the Texans giving up the points (like I do), the best point spread is -9 (+100) at BetOnline.com. They might have this covered by the end of the first quarter, then never look back.

Jets Point Spread

Sorry NY Jets fans, I just don’t see it happening. But, I’m not always right, so if you like New York to cover the best Jets point spread is +9 (-110) at Bovada.lv.

Houston Texans vs. NY Jets Money Line

Although I expect the Texans to win this game SU without much problem, I generally don’t bet the money line on a road team. At the time I’m writing this (Monday morning at 10:15am EST), the Texans money line is -380 (risk $38 to win $10) at BetOnline, and I’m not seeing value in that.

The best NY Jets money line is +320 at BetOnline, but again, I don’t see them winning this SU. Although the payout is decent for a home team, the Jets will have to create small miracles to win this. I don’t recommend a wager on the Jets money line.

Texans vs. Jets Over/Under

The current Texans vs. Jets over/under is 40 (-110) on either side at BetOnline.com, and o40.5 (-105) / u40.5 (-115) at Bovada.lv.

The Texans have put up 27, 31, and 38 respectively in the last 3 weeks, against defenses as good or better than the Jets. Their ability to put points on the board isn’t really the issue here, it’s about the Jets offense. Can they do their part to help the over? Their offense is terrible, and the Texans defense is fantastic (very similar to what they faced last week). A bet on the over essentially means we’re giving the Jets credit for 10-13 points, and the typical 27+ from the Texans.

Being a MNF game with the entire country watching, I’m going to give New York credit for 13+, and the Texans to do their thing. It could be close, but I like the over in this one. I’m betting the over of 40 (-110) at BetOnline.com.

We can also get o40.5 (-105) at Bovada, but I want the extra 1/2 point and I don’t mind paying a nickel to get it. The Texans vs Jets over/under looks very close, and I’m only giving the over a slight edge. If you prefer the under, you can get an extra 1/2 point at Bovada, but you’ll have to pay -115 to get it.
