Syracuse Orange vs. Michigan Wolverines – 2013 Final Four Round

When: 8:45pm ET. Saturday, April 6th 2013
Where: Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia

These #4 seeds made it out of the South and East regions this year, but you could argue that the Syracuse Orange 30-9 (11-7 Big East) and Michigan Wolverines 30-7 (12-6 Big Ten) could have been higher seeds. Regardless of all that, this game between Syracuse and Michigan should be fun to watch. This game will be televised on CBS.

Orange vs. Wolverines Betting Preview

Syracuse vs. MichiganDuring the regular season the Orange finished with an RPI rank of #14 after playing the 7th toughest schedule (#7 SOS). Syracuse had a rough conference schedule, but they’ve been playing a lot better down the stretch and should have won the Big East title.

Syracuse was up 16 points against the Cardinals in the Big East title, but they blew the lead in the 2H. Michigan finished the year with an RPI rank of #21 and a SOS rank of #47. Michigan was 6-5 against T25 opponents this year after fading in the conference.

We have one of the most efficient offenses playing the most efficient defenses in this match-up. Michigan is #2 in off efficiency (1.133) and #98 in def efficiency (0.953) while Syracuse ranks #6 in def efficiency (0.864) and #57 in off efficiency (1.044).

Michigan has averaged 78.8 PPG in the tournament, but the Syracuse zone defense can be tough to beat. Teams in the tourney have only scored an average of 45.8 PPG against the Orange this year while shooting a combined 29% from the field.

This season the Orange has averaged 70.8 PPG, 38.5 RPG, 14.1 APG, 9.1 SPG and 6.3 BPG. The Wolverines have averaged 75.5 PPG, 35.2 RPG, 14.5 APG, 6.2 SPG and 2.8 BPG. The match-up is close on paper, but let’s take a look at a couple of the key battles.

How the Syracuse Orange Can Win

The Orange defense has been absolutely lights out through four games. They need to continue playing tough zone defense and force the Wolverines into turnovers. Syracuse has forced the other team into an average of 16.5 TPG in the tournament.

Syracuse has to keep the basketball out of the paint as well. The Cuse had 17 blocks combined against Indiana and Marquette in their L2 games. They need to keep Mitch McGary in check, as he has emerged as a star in the tourney with 17.5 PPG and 11.5 RPG.

The Cuse also need to be more efficient offensively, as they won’t shutdown Michigan completely. CJ Fair has been productive with 13.8 PPG and 6 RPG, but Michael Carter-Williams is the key. He has 13 PPG, 5.8 RPG and 4.8 APG in the tourney.

How the Michigan Wolverines Can Win

Michigan will win this game if they can execute efficiently on offense against the stingy zone defense. Trey Burke has averaged 15.5 PPG and 7.8 APG in the tournament, but the big story has been the emergence of big man Mitch McGary in the paint.

McGary may find it tough to score in the paint against Cuse, but he’ll be a huge help on the defensive end. Syracuse has grabbed an average of 9 ORPG in their four tourney games and McGary has to ensure that doesn’t happen in this game.

Two other keys will be protecting the basketball, as turnovers have killed teams against Syracuse. Another huge factor will be how well the Wolverines shoot the 3-ball. Michigan has gone 33/82 (40.2%) from beyond the arc so far in the tournament.

Syracuse Orange vs. Michigan Wolverines Prediction

My wager on this game is on the Syracuse Orange money line at +115 odds. Syracuse has a lot of big bodies and they execute a perfect defensive scheme that frustrates the best offensive teams. I also felt Michigan was “lucky” to advance against KU.

Michigan showed no defensive spirit against KU until the last few minutes of the game. The Wolverines offense can score in a fury, but I feel that if they go down on this Cuse team they won’t be able to get back into the game unless they shoot lights out.
