* South Carolina vs. LSU betting lines updated Saturday morning.

College football handicappers looking at South Carolina vs. LSU have to be asking themselves whether or not LSU is the real deal. That’s because the Tigers simply aren’t dominating teams the way the betting public expects them to after last year’s special season. After losing to #10 Florida last week, this may be their last shot at staying in the hunt for a return trip to the BCS Championship.

South Carolina on the other hand, has been consistently outgunning opponents all season. Just last week they embarrassed then-#5 Georgia Bulldogs 35-7. A win in Baton Rouge would also give them their tenth consecutive victory, a school record.

This is a very interesting match up with major implications for bowl games, the SEC crown, and possibly the National Title.

South Carolina is not such a mystery. They’re clocking in at 5-1 ATS and have beat quality opponents and patsies alike. (That’s not something that LSU can safely say.)

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier says that he likes where his team is at and it’s easy to see why. They’re looking for their 10th SU win in their last 11 road games this week, and their second straight win over a ranked opponent.

Against the Bulldogs, Spurrier’s boys put up a defensive wall that held together in critical moments. Georgia’s leading rusher Ken Malcome ran for only 45 yards, and recorded their sole TD of the day which came well into 4th quarter garbage time. For comparison, South Carolina’s leading rusher, TB Marcus Lattimore ran for 109 yards.

I like the fact that QB Connor Shaw spread the ball around, throwing two TD’s each to two different receivers, and handing the ball off to Lattimore 24 times, including a one-yard TD run. They’re a team that’s come together well and can score in a number of ways.

LSU Tigers Betting Lines & Analysis

The LSU Tigers started the 2012 season red hot, but struggled with lowly Towson and Idaho early in the season. For whatever reason, they just don’t seem to have enough gas in their tanks to seal the deal. We know it’s the SEC, but the Tigers should beat Auburn by more than two points.

QB Zach Mettenberger is lucky his team doesn’t have more than one loss already. So far this season he’s only thrown 3 picks, but he’s been sacked 15 times. He’s also had some very slow starts that won’t be acceptable in a huge game like this.

Defensively, LSU has gelled a lot better and is only giving up around 10 points a game. Strangely, lowly Towson is the only opponent that’s been able to score more than 14 points on the Tigers. This week calls for classic, SEC defense and I expect them to be up for it.

So. Carolina vs. LSU Betting Lines & Free Picks

SEC games are tough to handicap and these two teams are very evenly matched. The X-factor is which LSU team is going to show up? The one that put up 41 points on Washington, or the one that struggled against Towson?

The South Carolina vs. LSU betting lines have been moved towards LSU in the past few days. They opened in the -2 to -2.5 range at most sportsbooks, and they’re -3 at the time I write this article (Friday @ 9:30am EST). This might be as far as it goes, but considering it went to -3 this early, we might even see -3.5 before game time.

South Carolina vs. LSU Point Spread

This is one of the closest point spreads LSU has faced this season, due in good part to their weak performance last week. The Tigers have been overvalued all season, but I like them in a close match up on their home turf. Before the point spread moves to -3.5 (may or may not happen), take the favorite in this one and learn and how to properly pronounce, “geaux.”

So. Carolina vs. LSU Money Line

I’m banking on an LSU comeback this week, despite South Carolina’s impressive record this year. LSU needs a win on Saturday or their season, and hopes of a decent bowl trip are out the window. For that reason alone I like LSU’s chances to knuckle down and get the job done.

If the LSU point spread were -2.5, I wouldn’t consider a money line bet here. However, at -3 on the spread, -140 on the money line doesn’t look bad to me. I think there is some value here, and I might wager a 1/2 unit on LSU.

South Carolina vs. LSU Over/Under

South Carolina vs. LSU Over/Under: 39.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com

Although LSU lost to Florida last week, they only gave up 14 points. In their last 5 games, LSU is 2-3 on the over/under, and haven’t been giving up many points. Aside from the flukey 22 points they gave up to Towson, LSU hasn’t allowed more than 14 points all season. South Carolina hasn’t given up more than 17 points in any game this season, and are 3-3 on the over/under so far.

The problem is, the So. Carolina vs. LSU over/under is just 39.5 points. With a total this low, it’s usually difficult to bet the under in NCAAAF. South Carolina has scored 31 to 49 points in each of their last 5 games, including 35 they put up against #5 Georgia last week. With that said, Georgia’s defense isn’t in the class of LSU’s, so we can’t expect a repeat of that 35 point day.

All things considered, I still like the under in this one. I’m not sure either team will put up 20+, let alone both of them. One of these teams is likely to walk out with something like 13-17 points, while the other is in the 17-24 range. It would take a defensive breakdown by one of these teams to beat the over, and I don’t think that will happen. No matter who wins, I expect this to be a low scoring affair, and I’m taking the under of 39.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com.
