Rio 2016: Summer Olympics Soccer Gold Medal Predictions

Rio 2016 Soccer LogoThe men’s and women’s soccer tournaments will conclude this week in Brazil. Both tournaments are into the semifinals round.

Bovada has updated the odds on winning the gold medal. While the men’s tournament is likely a battle between Brazil and Germany, the women’s tournament could be won by any of the four remaining teams.

Brazil are favorites to win the men’s and women’s gold in soccer, but the women’s tournament boasts a lot more competition, as all four of the teams left have a good chance at winning gold.

Olympics soccer men’s odds and picks

Semifinals Date: Wednesday, August 17th 2016
Finals Date: Saturday, August 20th 2016

Betting Odds: Brazil (-185), Germany (+270), Nigeria (+500) and Honduras (+1750)

Brazil are the hosts, but there’s no way they should be odds-on favorites to win gold. The Brazilians won Group A, but they had a 1-2-0 record against easy competition. Brazil looked better in a 2-0 win against the Colombians in the quarterfinals – a game where Neymar netted his first goal of the competition.

Germany finished second in Group B with 5 points (1-2-0) – South Korea won the group. Germany finished preliminary action with a 10-0 win against Fiji and they followed that up with a 4-0 win against Portugal in the QFs. Serge Gnabry (6 Goals) and Nils Petersen (5 Goals) lead the competition in goals.

Five players on Germany have scored multiple goals at the Olympics. This team has incredible depth on offense and if they continue firing on all cylinders, they’ll be crowned Olympic champions.

Brazil will need to get through Honduras in the SFs. Honduras finished second in Group D with 4 points (1-1-1). Honduras were fortunate to get a 1-0 win against the South Koreans in the QFs to advance, but even the underachieving Brazilians should have an easy path into the gold medal match.

The Germans play Nigeria in the SFs in what could be a tricky match. Nigeria won Group B with 6 points (2-0-1) and they won impressively against Denmark (2-0). John Obi Mikel scored in the QFs – it was his first goal in the competition. Oghenekaro Etebo is third in the tournament in scoring with four goals.

Nigeria beat up on Japan (5-4) in the prelims, won a close match against the Swedes (1-0) and the lost to Colombia (2-0). Since allowing two goals against Mexico and tree goals against South Korea, the Germans have had two clean sheets. Germany needs to play tight at the back and control the pace to advance.

Olympics soccer women’s odds and picks

Semifinals Date: Tuesday, August 16th 2016
Finals Date: Friday, August 19th 2016

Betting Odds: Brazil (+140), Germany (+165), Canada (+525) and Sweden (+700)

With the US out, the women’s tournament has become a lot more wide open. The hosts Brazil are favorites after winning Group E with 7 points (2-1-0). Brazil needed a shootout to defeat Australia in the QFs after neither could score. It has been an up and down tournament for the Brazilian side.

Brazil looked great beating China (3-0) and Sweden (5-1) during the prelims, but they struggled against South Africa (0-0) and the Aussies (0-0). Beatriz, Cristiane and Marta have each scored two goals in the competition and all three women scored in the Sweden win – the team they’ll play in the SFs.

Sweden shocked USA in the QFs. They were level at 1-1 after OT, but the Swedes won in a shootout. After the match, Hope Solo made a comment calling the Swedish team “cowards”. They played a great technical match, but after the emotional win over Team USA, I expect a letdown, allowing Brazil to advance.

I’m betting on Team Canada, as the value is excellent. Canada are undefeated – winning all three prelims matches against Australia, Zimbabwe and Germany, plus defeating France (1-0) in the QFs. Canada have scored 8 goals and only conceded 2 goals in the tournament.

Christine Sinclair is the undisputed leader of the Canadian team and she has scored two goals. Canada’s leading goalscorer is Janine Beckie (3 Goals), which is only behind Melanie Behringer (4 Goals) in the tournament. Canada beat Germany in the prelims, so they know what needs done to earn a finals berth.

Germany finished second in Group F behind Canada with 4 points (1-1-1) and defeated China (1-0) in the QFs. Germany v Canada will be a close SF match, but the Canadians will advance if they continue to play like they have all tournament, although it’s definitely the tougher of the two semifinal matches.
