The Washington Redskins have rebuilt their team for 2012-13 and will now feature Robert Griffin III (RG3) at QB. For week 1 of the 2012 season, the Redskins travel to the Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints who had a perfect 8-0 home record during last year’s regular season.

Washington Redskins vs. New Orleans Saints Week 1 Betting Lines

New Orleans opened as an -11 point favorite, but the off-season hasn’t been kind to the Saints due to the Bounty Scandal. At the current time the Saints are a -7 point favorite while the over/under has moved from 51.5 points (opening) to 49.5 points. Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins (5-11) had a tough 2011-12 season. The Redskins were 6-9-1 ATS and were a great team to fade. Washington ranked 14th in passing offense (221.8 PYPG), 25th in rushing offense (94.9 RYPG) and 26th in points scored (16.9 PPG).

With RG3 now leading the way at QB, this offense should be improved over last year. He’s looked good in his preseason games, more like a seasoned veteran than most rookie QB’s. In three preseason games he’s combined for 20-31 (64.5%) for 193 yards and 2 TD’s. The Redskins also signed WR Pierre Garcon who I expect to be RG3’s #1 target this season. One stat that killed WAS in 2011-12 was their turnovers (2.1 P/G), and I’m sure Mike Shanahan is working to improve in that area.

Washington should run the football better this season with RB’s Evan Royster and Roy Helu sharing carries. If the defense can limit the Saints offensively (not an easy task), this offense should have enough talent to stay competitive in this NFL week 1 match-up.

New Orleans Saints

As everyone knows, the Saints head into the regular season dealing with suspensions due to the Bounty Scandal. It’s been a brutal off-season for the Saints, with seemingly no end to their issues. For the players, getting back onto the field and playing games that matter is just what the doctor ordered. The divorce is over now, and they’ve found themselves a new girlfriend.

More good news for the Saints is that Drew Brees has signed a 5 year, $100 million dollar contract, and the passing attack should still be amongst the best in the NFL. Would we expect anything less?

Last year the Saints ranked 1st in passing offense (314.5 PYPG) and 6th in rushing offense (125.1 RYPG). New Orleans also put up an average of 32.2 PPG (2nd). If they can replicate their offensive output from 2011-12 they’ll continue to be a tough team to beat.

The New Orleans Saints went 8-0 at home during the regular season last year, and they put up huge offensive numbers in the dome. Brees has one less target (Meachem), but Jimmy Graham, Marques Colston and Devery Henderson should pick up the slack.

Redskins vs. Saints Point Spread

With this game being played at the Superdome in New Orleans, the Saints have the potential to blowout the Redskins. Washington should stuff the running attack of the Saints, but QB Drew Brees should have a big day. We’re backing the Saints point spread of -7 (-110) at BetOnline.

Money Line

The latest Redskins vs. Saints money line is +290 / -350 respectively. I think the Saints -350 are a great addition to a moneyline parlay for week 1. I don’t think the Redskins have much of a chance to win this game and I don’t see any value in the Redskins money line of +290.

New Orleans vs. Washington Over/Under (O/U)

In this week 1 match-up, the latest Washington vs. New Orleans over/under is 49.5 points. The Saints averaged 41.1 PPG at home last season and they’re easily capable of scoring 40+ on their own. I’ve bet on the o49.5 (-110) and it’s my favorite bet in this Saints vs. Redskins game. Imo, this O/U is one of the best opportunities for week 1.
