Ravens vs. Steelers Betting Lines – AFC Wild Card

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

When: Saturday, January 3rd 2015 at 8:15pm ET
Where: Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Watch: NBC

Three teams from the AFC North made the playoffs this season. The Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) won the division and they’ll host the Baltimore Ravens (10-6) on Saturday night in the AFC Wild Card Round. You couldn’t ask for a better first round playoff match-up.

These two teams split the season series (1-1) with each team winning at home. Baltimore won back in September at home (26-6) while Pittsburgh dominated at home in November (43-23). The home team has won the last four H2H meetings in this series.

Ravens vs. Steelers Point Spread & Over/Under

Early action has come in on the Steelers, but I don’t expect the line to move before kick-off. Adding a hook would be dangerous for the bookies in what should be a close game. The total is high, but the over is 6-3 in the last nine H2H meetings between these two.

Both of these offenses are scoring close to the same amount of points, but the Steelers pick up many more yards. Defensively, the edge goes to the Ravens who have been much better all season at stopping opponents, so this will be an interesting game.

Bet on the Steelers to Cover the Spread Against the Ravens

I’m going with the home team for multiple reasons that I’ll explain. First off, is the Ravens offense has been dreadful lately. They’ve only been able to score 20 points on Jacksonville, 13 points on Houston and 20 points on Cleveland the last three weeks.

Joe Flacco has looked terrible during that time, which isn’t ideal when heading into the playoffs. Justin Forsett has also had trouble finding running room due to injuries to the Ravens o-line. I don’t expect Baltimore to be able to keep up on the scoreboard.

Baltimore is averaging 238.7 PYPG (13th) and 126.2 RYPG (8th), but those numbers are down as of late. Pittsburgh hasn’t been good at stopping the pass (253.1 PYPG – 27th), but they have one of the best run stopping units in the NFL (100.3 RYPG – 6th).

If the Steelers can shutdown Forsett and force Flacco to beat them I really like Pittsburgh’s chances to win. Baltimore has also had problems stopping the pass (248.7 PYPG – 24th), but like Pittsburgh they’re really good against the run (88.2 RYPG – 4th).

Ben Roethlisberger is having a great season and the Steelers offense is ranked 2nd in passing yards (301.6 PYPG). Antonio Brown has had another incredible season and Le’Veon Bell has been deadly through the air and on the ground throughout the year.

Pittsburgh also has two speedster WR’s in Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant. They’re wildly inconsistent, but they can beat you on any given play. If one of these two receivers can catch a long TD pass in this game it could be the deciding factor.

When it comes down to it the Steelers have way more weapons on offense than Baltimore. Torrey Smith and Steve Smith Sr won’t be able to match the production of the Steelers WR’s and I’d take Bell over Forsett in the run game any day of the week.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction

If this point spread was much higher I’d have to think about this bet more, but at just a FG I’ll be on the Steelers. Not only has the home team dominated this series the last couple years, but the Steelers are much more explosive on offense than Baltimore.

Flacco has shown that he can turn it up when it matters most in the playoffs, but I weight recent form heavily and Flacco has looked poor against weak competition the past month. This will likely be close, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Pittsburgh rolled either.
