Ravens vs. Patriots – Can Baltimore Extend Their Win Streak

New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens Week 16

When: Sunday, December 22nd 2013 at 4:25pm ET
Where: M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland
Watch: CBS

The New England Patriots 10-4 (6-8 ATS) have a chance to lock up the AFC East with a win this week. Even with a loss the Patriots will still be in the driver’s seat in the division. Losing to Miami (24-20) wasn’t ideal for the Pats, but it didn’t hurt their chances too much.

Another team in the AFC that’s in the thick of the playoff race is the Baltimore Ravens 8-6 (7-6-1 ATS). They’ve reeled off four wins in a row and they’re only 1-game back of the Bengals in the AFC North. They also have a shot at earning the 2nd wild card in the AFC.

Betting Odds in BAL @ NE

The point spread in this game is at –1 (-110) in favor of the Ravens right now. If you want to bet Baltimore take the spread, but if you want to bet on New England the money line has better value. You can bet on the money line, game total or point spread at Bovada.

Will the Patriots Continue to Struggle on the Road

New England is one of four teams that is still undefeated at home, but the Patriots are just 3-4 on the road. The Pats have only been able to beat the Texans, Falcons and Bills on the road while they have losses against the Dolphins, Panthers, Jets and Bengals.

The Pats are just 1-4 in their last five away games and they’ve only averaged 21.4 PPG in those match-ups, which is quite a bit lower than their season average of 26.4 PPG (6th). Offensively the Pats are picking up an average of 272.4 PYPG (6th) and 118.3 RYPG (12th).

It’ll be tough for the Patriots in the cold this week against a defense that has gotten better as the season has progressed. Baltimore is a T10 defense that allows 19.8 PPG (7th), 231.6 PYPG (13th) and 102.4 RYPG (7th). They’re not really weak anywhere on defense.

To start the season Baltimore had a lot of defensive problems, but in the last four games they’ve only allowed 16.3 PPG. It took a bit of time to gel together after the huge amount of turnover on the Ravens defense, but they finally look like the defense we know.

Baltimore had a scare last week, as Joe Flacco looked like he had a knee injury, but it didn’t require an MRI. Flacco will be starting in the game, but he hasn’t looked good this season. The Ravens only average 21.1 PPG (25th), 227 PYPG (20th) and 82.9 RYPG (29th).

The Ravens need to try and get their run game going to have a shot at winning this game. The Patriots allow 132.5 RYPG (31st) and 240.2 PYPG (18th). However, they only allow opponents to score 22.2 PPG (11th) thanks in large part to their +6 turnover ratio.

New England has averaged 1 interception per game and Flacco has thrown 17 INT’s this season. Brady in unlikely to turn it over and I expect the Pats to win the turnover battle. Flacco has been playing poorly and I don’t think Baltimore will even make the playoffs.

Breakout Performers in This Game

Edelman has really stepped up this season. He leads the team with 89 receptions, 914 receiving yards and 6 TD’s. Tom Brady looks comfortable throwing to Edelman. For New England to win Edelman needs to be able to beat this Ravens secondary.

It’s hard to pick Rice as my breakout performer on the Ravens this week, but this is a great match-up for him. The Pats can’t stop the run. Rice is averaging 3.1 yards per carry, but he only has 197 carries. Look for him to get a bigger workload this week at home.

Patriots vs. Ravens Best Bets

Baltimore is 6-1 at home with their lone loss against the Packers when Rodgers was still in the line-up. The Ravens home schedule is fairly weak this season though. If Edelman and Gronkowski can get in sync with Brady the Patriots should be able to win.
