Patriots vs. Titans Point Spread, Money Line & O/U

What: New England Patriots vs. Tennessee Titans: NFL Week 1 Football
When: 1:00 pm EST. Sunday, September 9, 2012
Where: LP Field

The last time the New England Patriots traveled to Nashville was in 2006, so there’s nothing to learn from previous matchups. The Tennessee Titans will be starting rookie QB Jake Locker, who matches up against some guy named Brady. David vs. Goliath? I’d say so.

The good news for the Titans is that they’re playing at home, against a young & inexperienced Patriots secondary that was terrible last year. Locker should be able to penetrate the Patriots defense and put some points on the board. The question is, can the Titans cover the spread?

Patriots vs. Titans Betting Lines

When NFL week 1 betting lines were released the Patriots opened as -6.5 point favorites. That line is down to -5.5 to -6 at most books now, showing that bettors are giving the Titans a bit of respect. The Patriots vs. Titans over/under opened at 48.5, but has come down to 47 in recent days.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots proved last season that offense can almost win championships. The Patriots ranked 2nd in passing yard on offense (299.3 PYPG) and 3rd in points per game (30.2 PPG). However, the defense was amongst the worst in the NFL.

The New England defense ranked dead last in total yards last year, allowing 387.3 YPG. Regardless of that awful stat, the Pats defense only allowed 20.1 PPG (15th) – good enough to lead the AFC East with a 13-3 regular season record. The New England secondary might not fare any better in 2012-13, so we could see a lot of similar games this year.

NE signed Brandon Lloyd to take over as the #1 WR in town and the offense should be nearly unstoppable (was that ever a question?). The Patriots drafted some great defensive talent including DE Chandler Jones and LB Dont’a Hightower, and they’ll need these rookies to put on their big boy pants right away.

Tennessee Titans

Titans RB Chris Johnson had the worst year of his career in 2011, finishing 31st in rushing (65.4 RYPG), with just 4 TD’s. Last season Johnson was out of shape due to his holdout and the team didn’t have a solid O-line. For 2012-13, we expect a more effective rushing attack by the Titans, which should take a lot of pressure off of rookie QB Jake Locker.

Last season, the Tennessee Titans ranked 12th in passing offense with 230.8 PYPG, but they only scored 19.1 PPG (22nd). Jake Locker is scheduled to start the season for the Titans in week 1 against the Pats, and this youth movement could be good for the team.

Locker is talented and he should be able to pass the football against an inept Patriots secondary. The betting lines have been dropping in favor of the Titans for a reason, and this game should be closer than public money expects.

Patriots vs. Titans Point Spread

When the point spread opened at -6.5 for the Patriots there were some +7’s to be found on the Titans. I liked betting Titans +7, but with the current Titans vs. Patriots point spread down to -5.5, I’m starting to like the Pat’s. Two field goals does it, and how do we bet against the Patriots in this situation? Experience, and that potent offense should be able to get the job done against the Titans with Jake Locker playing his first regular season NFL game.

Go with the experience and proven ability to win, give up the points and take Patriots -5.5 (-105) at BetOnline.com.

Pats / Titans Money Line

The best Patriots money line is -230 at Bovada.lv (bet $23 to win $10). The best Titans money line is +200 at BetOnline.com (bet $10 to win $20).

The Titans have a shot at keeping this game close and winning as a moneyline underdog, but I’d pass at +200 odds. The Titans are at home, and they should be better this year. However, betting on a rookie QB against the experience of Tom Brady and the Patriots doesn’t sound like a smart wager.

I do like the idea of adding the Pats to a small parlay with maybe the Bills and Chiefs, to add a bit of value.

Over/Under for Titans vs. Patriots

My best bet in this week 1 Patriots vs. Titans match-up is the over, 47 (-110). Both teams will score points and the reason the total has dropped is because the Titans are starting a rookie QB. Take the over and you’ll be happy by the end of the 3rd quarter.

I’m taking o47 (-110) at BetOnline all day long.
