Patriots vs. Ravens Point Spread & Over/Under

What: New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens: Week 3 Sunday Night Football
When: 8:20 pm EST. Sunday, September 23, 2012
Where: M&T Bank Stadium

The New England Patriots 1-1 (1-1 ATS) and Baltimore Ravens 1-1 (2-0 ATS) not only lost last weekend, but neither of them looked very good either. The Patriots lost at home against the Cardinals, and the Ravens lost to Philly on the road. This is a huge Sunday Night Football matchup, and should have plenty of fireworks. For handicappers and fans alike, this is as juicy as a week 3 matchup gets.

New England Patriots

New England looked good in week 1 when they beat the Titans (34-13), but they lost 20-18 to the Cardinals in week 2. Although they played poorly the entire game, they still had a chance to win the game in the final seconds. Field-goal kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the 42 yard game winning FG, and the Pats fell to 1-1 on the season.

The Patriots offense ranks 8th in passing yards (262.5 PYPG) and 9th in rushing yards (126 RYPG). The defense has also been good early on, ranking 7th at stopping the pass (202 PYPG) and 5th at stopping the run (62.5 RYPG).

The Patriots haven’t played a strong opposing offense yet, but the Ravens will be a good test. Tom Brady will need to have a better game in week 3 on the road to beat the Ravens, but if the defense continues to play well it should be a great battle.

Baltimore Ravens

Against the Eagles in week 2, the Baltimore Ravens had a 17-7 lead going into halftime. However, they came out flat in the 2nd half and ended up losing the game 24-23. Although they lost the game, the Ravens still covered the point spread on the road. QB Joe Flacco had a bad game that included 1 INT and only 1 TD.

RB Ray Rice rushed the football 16 times for 99 yards, but he didn’t get into the end zone. The WR’s were almost nonexistent versus the Eagles. The WR’s had just 6 total catches, but TE Pitta had 8 receptions for 65 yards and Rice had 6 catches for 53 yards.

The passing game needs to improve in Baltimore if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs. Defenses will be able to stack the box and stop Rice in the rushing game if Flacco doesn’t pick it up. He should have better success against a questionable Pats secondary.

Patriots/Ravens Point Spread

The Patriots vs. Ravens betting lines are bouncing all over right now. Every NFL fan will be watching and every handicapper will be betting, so expect the lines to keep moving right up until game time. Our picks are based on where the lines are right now (Saturday night), so keep that in mind when placing your own bets.

Patriots Point Spread

The Ravens are tough to beat at home, but it’s hard to pass on the Patriots getting points (even on the road). My recommendation is to flip your lucky quarter and give the Ravens heads (because they’re the home team, naturally).

No, that’s not really my pick, or my process (although it could be so far this season). I’m actually taking the Patriots because I like the points. Brady will have a better game this week and I like the way the Pats defense has played early on. I think they’ll win this game SU, but I like +1.5 (-105) at BetOnline – just in case this is as close as it is on paper.

If you like the Patriots but want more points, you can get them +3 (-130) at Bovada right now. Since I’m looking for a SU win by the Pats, I don’t want to pay -130. However, I have no argument with anyone who disagrees with that.

Ravens Point Spread

I expect this to be a fairly high scoring game, so if you’re picking the Ravens to win this straight-up, it’s probably better to give up the points. Instead of betting the Ravens money line, I would bet the Ravens -3 (+110) at Bovada and hope for a push in worst-case scenario. If you think the Ravens will win a close one, you might prefer -1.5 (-115) at BetOnline.

New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens Money Line

The Patriots vs. Ravens money line is currently Patriots +110 / Ravens -130, and I don’t like either of these money lines. With that said, the money line is going to keep moving right up until the game begins, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Patriots Money Line

The Patriots money line is +110 at BetOnline as I write this article. Although I’m betting the Patriots point spread, I’ll stay away from the money line unless it moves to +125 or better. I don’t expect this to be a 1-point game, but I want the extra 1.5 points anyway – just in case. I’m only paying -105 on a team I expect to win outright, so I’m happy getting 1.5 as insurance.

Admittedly I’m being a bit of a pussy on this one, but the only explanation I have for it is that I like getting 1.5 points and only paying -105 for it. Since I can see this game going in either direction, I see value in the spread that we can’t normally get on the Pats. I don’t see a reason to risk another bet on the money line on a coin-flip, so I’m taking my points and leaving it at that.

Ravens Money Line

Since I don’t expect this game to come down to a point or two, I don’t like the Ravens money line. If you like the Ravens straight-up, I recommend the point spread instead. You’re giving up the points, but getting a better price. I don’t think 1.5 points will be the difference, so I wouldn’t pay -130 on the money line.

Ravens vs. Patriots Over/Under

The Ravens have gone over the total in both games this season while the Pats have gone under in both of theirs. The total is high, currently at 50 points after being bet up earlier in the week. I was loving the over when the o/u opened at 46.5, but I don’t love it so much at 50. With that said, this game could still go over that total, so I’m not taking the under just yet. I’m going to watch where this goes, and may make a late bet just before the game starts. If it goes up to 51 or better I’ll jump on the under. I don’t expect the Ravens vs Patriots over/under to come down from where it is right now, definitely not enough to make me take the over.

My recommendation is to keep an eye on the over/under at BetOnline, and take the under if you see u51 (-110) or better.
