New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Preview

Start Time: October 20th 2013 at 1:00pm ET
Location: MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford
Watch: Live on CBS

The New England Patriots 5-1 (3-3 ATS) play the New York Jets 3-3 (4-2 ATS) for the second time this season. In the first meeting it was very close, but the Pats escaped with a 13-10 win at home. Will the Pats sweep the series this week on the road?

New England has swept the season series against their division foes the last two years and they can make it three consecutive years with a victory on Sunday. With the battle in the AFC East heating up you can bet these two teams won’t be taking this game lightly.

Latest Odds in Patriots vs. Jets

You can still get the Patriots at –3.5, but this point spread has been moving up and I think that’s the best bet in this game. The total is at O/U 43.5 points at the moment and I could make a case for this game going over or under, so I’ll be leaving this market alone.

Can New England Remain Undefeated in the AFC East

The Patriots opened up the season 2-0 with wins over the Bills (23-21) and Jets (13-10). Since then the Pats have been improving and they’re likely to improve even more this week, as TE Rob Gronkowski is expected to be back in the line-up albeit in a limited role.

I expect that just getting Gronks back in the LU will be enough to get Tom Brady and the offense on track. Last week NE had a huge comeback at home against the Saints and they won 30-27 after moving the football 70 yards down the field with just 1:08 left.

Brady had one interception in the game while only throwing for 269 yards (25/43) and 1 TD. The running game was moving better than in prior weeks. Steven Ridley led the charge with 20 carries for 96 yards and 2 TD’s. The Pats gained 141 total rushing yards.

So far this season it has been the defense (16.2 PPG – 3rd) keeping the Pats in games rather than the offense (20.8 PPG – 22nd) for the most part, but expect the offense to start doing better. With Gronks suiting up the run game should open up (120.5 RYPG – 11th).

However, running on the Jets hasn’t been easy for anyone this season (75.7 RYPG – 2nd). In the first game between these two teams the Jets held the Patriots to just 54 rushing yards (0 TD’s) on 24 carries although I think they should be much closer to 100 this week.

With the way the Patriots offense is playing as of late the Jets will only have a chance if Geno Smith plays well. Smith already has 10 interceptions and as a team the Jets have a –11 turnover margin. Against NE in week 2 Smith threw 3 INT’s and 0 TD passes.

The Jets offense has struggled most of the season although they did put up 30 points on Atlanta in a week 5 win. They still have only averaged 17.3 PPG (29th), 221.2 PYPG (22nd) and 115.5 RYPG (14th) offensively, which won’t win you too many NFL games.

Most Important Positional Battles in NE vs. NYJ

New England is putting up 228.3 PYPG (19th), which is terrible by their standards albeit expected due to injuries. All signs are pointing to Gronks playing and with him on the field it’ll take pressure off the rest of the WR’s (Edelman, Thompkins, Dodson & Amendola).

The Jets defense is deadly at stopping the run, but they’re around the league average in passing yards allowed (228.2 PYPG (12th). In this match-up Brady and the young receivers need to keep drives moving and they also can’t afford turnovers (Brady has 4 INT’s).

I expect Bilal Powell to get most of the carries this week although expect to see Chris Ivory and Mike Goodson. The Jets have been utilizing all three running backs the last two weeks to try and find an answer on improving their run game, which is ranked #14.

This season the Pats have one of the worst run stopping units (118.8 RYPG – 24th) in the NFL. The battle in the trenches will be vital to how this game plays out. If the Patriots shutdown the Jets rush it’ll force them to throw and Geno is likely to make mistakes.

Jets vs. Patriots Week 7 Best Bet

New England went 6-0 in the AFC East last season and they’re on their way to doing that again this year. Belichick knows that these division games are very important and at the end of the day the Patriots are the better team in this week 7 match-up.
