Panthers vs. Seahawks NFC Playoffs Betting Preview

Carolina Panthers vs. Seattle Seahawks Preview

Start Time: Saturday, January 10th 2015 at 8:15pm ET
Stadium: CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington
Station: FOX

The Seattle Seahawks (12-4) won the NFC West and earned a first round playoff bye. They’ll now have a huge advantage at home in the NFC divisional round against the Carolina Panthers (7-8-1) who just beat up on the Cardinals in the wild card round.

These two teams have played each other once every year for the past three years and the Seahawks are 3-0 in that span. These two teams will know what to expect on the field this weekend and it should be a hard fought battle between teams with similar styles.

I’m a little surprised that this point spread is so big, especially when you consider that the total is on the low side. Seattle is getting about 65% of the action right now. The under has been receiving about 65% of the action as well and the total is down a 1/2 point.

CAR @ SEA Statistics

These two teams may have similar styles, but the Seahawks are much better at executing consistently. Both teams are hot, as the Panthers have won five in a row while Seattle has won six in a row, but there are some definite edges that the Seahawks have.

Why I’m Betting on Carolina to Cover the Point Spread

I can’t believe the point spread is this big in a playoff match-up, but I’ll gladly take the points. Seattle is 3-0 against Carolina in recent years, but their biggest winning margin was five points. Now the bookies are expecting them to cover double digits in the playoffs?

Seattle is an efficient team that does a lot with a little. They’re not explosive and they don’t play at a fast pace, but they put up a lot of points because of the effectiveness of their team. The Seahawks offense averages 203.1 PYPG (27th) and 172.6 RYPG (1st).

Marshawn Lynch has been his normal self this season again like usual. Russell Wilson has really stepped up how often he runs the football and it has proven successful. Look for Wilson to use his scrambling ability against a Panthers defense that’ll have no answer.

Carolina’s defense allows 227.8 PYPG (11th) and 112.0 RYPG (16th), which isn’t bad by any stretch. However, they’re going to have a tough time limiting the Seahawks run game. No matter how you try to stop them they find a way to beat you with option plays.

Last week the Panthers defense played well, but that was against a bunch of scrubs. Now they’ll be really tested and I expect them to fold under the pressure. Will Cam Newton and the Panthers offense be able to keep them in the game long enough to cover?

I believe they will as long as Jonathan Stewart runs like he has been the past several weeks. Carolina only averages 219.4 PYPG (19th), but like the Seahawks, they have a strong run game (127.2 RYPG – 7th) that has only been getting better as of late.

Carolina also has to try and exploit the TE position. Greg Olsen is a beast at TE and has put up incredible numbers this season and I expect him to find holes in this secondary while the focus is on stopping Kelvin Benjamin. Olsen needs to put up a 100+ yard game.

Panthers vs. Seahawks Picks

I expect this game to be fairly close throughout with Seattle winning comfortably by a TD. Wilson can run the football, but Newton is also capable of scrambling for yards and he has done more of that recently as well. Stewart has also looked great in the run game.

Arizona is a good run stopping team and Stewart looked good against them, so I expect him to have some success on Seattle. This o-line is opening up a lot of space. With both teams content running the football it’ll be very difficult for Seattle to blow out.
