Over/Under Pick Week 13 – New York Giants at Pittsburgh Steelers

New York Giants(8-3-0) @ Pittsburgh Steelers(6-5-0)

  • Where: Heinz Field. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • When: December 4, 2016 4:25 pm EST

While the Pittsburgh Steelers are seeking a third straight win, the degree of difficulty in opposing quarterbacks increases significantly on Sunday when they host Eli Manning and the red-hot New York Giants at Heinz Field.

The Steelers have looked impressive in beating Cleveland and Indianapolis by a combined 52-16 scoreline the last two weeks to gain a share of the AFC North lead with Baltimore. But those victories came against three underwhelming signal-callers as they knocked Browns starter Cody Kessler out of the game before successfully dealing with Josh McCown in Week 11, and then stifled Colts backup Scott Tolzien in a 28-7 win at Indianapolis on Thanksgiving night.

Pittsburgh recorded three interceptions and forced four turnovers overall, in part to yielding just 124 rushing yards in those wins and daring those quarterbacks to beat them through the air. But during a four-game losing streak before those wins, the Steelers allowed 1,043 passing yards and five TDs to Scott Tannehill, Tom Brady, Joe Flacco and Dak Prescott as their teams amassed 113 points.

And the Giants are arguably the hottest team in the NFL not named the Dallas Cowboys — they’ve won six in a row to remain two games behind the in the NFC East while currently holding down the conference’s first wild-card spot. Manning has been effective during this winning streak, throwing for 1,571 yards and 15 TDs. He had 194 yards and three scoring passes — two to Odell Beckham Junior — in a 27-14 victory over winless Cleveland last Sunday.

New York also has been playing well defensively, forcing 11 turnovers in the last five games and limiting opponents to 82.8 rushing yards per game during its winning streak. The Giants ‘D’ has also worked hard at getting off the field, limiting opponents to a 29.2 percent conversion rate on third down in the last six contests, including a 23.1 percent mark (12 for 52) in the last four.

Will the Steelers Stay Balanced Offensively?

Pittsburgh’s offense has been crisp the last two games, and it’s no coincidence Le’Veon Bell has had two of his best games of the season. He topped the 100-yard mark in both victories and finished with 120 yards and a touchdown against the Colts. More importantly, he has not been tackled for a loss in the last two games after being dropped behind the line of scrimmage three times in a 35-30 loss to the Cowboys. The Steelers are 3-0 when Bell hits the century mark and 5-1 when they rush for 100 or more yards this season, so if the Bell tolls for New York, it may ring in another win for Pittsburgh.

Beckham Jr. Looking to Break Out for the Giants

Hidden in this win streak is that Beckham has not gone over 100 receiving yards in five straight games — the longest streak of his professional career. Yet Beckham has definitely left his mark on these victories with seven of his eight TD catches in those games, and 23 of his 38 catches in that span have resulted in first downs.

He barely missed going over 100 yards last week, finishing with 96, and his 341 yards after the catch overall this season is tied for seventh in the NFL. Manning has never shied from throwing Beckham’s way, and against a soft Steelers pass defense that yields 278.8 yards per game, this could be an ideal time for the former LSU wideout to turn in a big game.

Why I’m taking the OVER of 49 points for the New York Giants vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game

While this is the only third head-to-head meeting for Manning and Roethlisberger, both have engineered fourth-quarter rallies to win on the road in the previous two contests. While neither had gaudy numbers in those matchups, this one seems destined for a high-scoring affair given how in sync the offenses of both teams are of late. Pittsburgh has scored 24 or more points in its last three games, and New York has found the end zone at least three times in five wins during its win streak.

Additionally, the big-play potential of Beckham on one side and Antonio Brown on the other means a long-scoring pass play is all but certain. Both receivers are poised to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in this game — Beckham needs 85 and Brown 18 — and have combined for 17 receptions of at least 25 yards. Their talent, coupled with the soft pass defenses both teams have, means there should be plenty of scoring opportunities to be had.

That’s why I’m recommending to play the OVER of 49 points at the Bovada Sportsbook for the New York Giants vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game.
