Notre Dame vs Michigan State Betting Lines

What: #20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs #10 Michigan State Spartans NCAA Football
When: 8 pm EST. Saturday. September 15, 2012
Where: Spartan Stadium. East Lansing, MI

The #10 Michigan Spartans (2-0, 1-1 ATS) are the only thing standing between #20 Notre Dame (2-0, 1-1 ATS) and their first 3-0 start since 2002. So far the Spartans have been playing a very balanced style of football with plenty of passing from QB Andrew Maxwell (42-69, 523 yds, 2 TDs, 3 INTs) and a ground attack spearheaded by junior RB Le’Veon Bell (62 carries, 280 yds, 4 TDs). They’re highly favored to win the Big Ten Legends and could take even bigger prizes.

As one of the closest matchups between ranked teams this weekend, this is a game that’s going to be watched closely by handicappers who like mainstream action. Michigan St. is a -6 favorite in this game, and that’s a number early point spread bettors will want to jump on.

It’s a big game for both programs and will say a lot about whether one, or both of them, are the real deal. Be sure and check out out free moneyline, over/under and point spread picks at the end of this post.

Since the lines opened, the point spread has been holding steady with Michigan State -6. That could be an indication that the betting public just isn’t ready to handicap games that aren’t massive, non-conference mismatches. With a very reasonable over/under of 43.5, this is a game that’s dripping with value.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame came into the season with a weird QB situation with former starter Tommy Rees (3-6, 35 yds) sitting out on suspension while sophomore Everett Golson racked up the stats (33-49, 433 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT). Rees is expected to play against the Spartans, but only in a very limited capacity.

The Irish will be playing, but not starting RB Cierre Wood for the first time since his suspension for violating unnamed team rules. While none of this is ideal, it does give Notre Dame some lineup options that could keep the Spartans guessing.

Michigan State Spartans

We’ve touched on the balance of Michigan State’s offense and that’s going to be one of their biggest weapons in this fight. Expect them to establish a dominant running game early on that should keep their offense on the field while the Irish offense twiddles their thumbs.

On the other side of the ball, you can expect the Michigan State defense to be stingy. Their two opponents this season, Boise State and Central Michigan put up a combined total of 20 points. The MSU defense has also forced six fumbles while the offense has only fumbled once.

I expect to see junior QB Andrew Maxwell to come into his own under this big-game atmosphere. Maxwell has started the 2012-13 season 42-69 (60.9%) for 523 yards, 2 TD’s and 3 INT’s. If he can take a step forward, make good decisions and eliminate the interceptions, Michigan State should take this game.

Given the defensive prowess of these two defenses, we’re expecting a low scoring affair. Notre Dame is a bit untested this season, but struggled mightily against Purdue last week. That has to concern fans and bettors alike.

Notre Dame/Michigan St. Point Spread

Michigan State has already shown they can compete with quality teams and are rapidly turning into a Big Ten powerhouse. They won’t blow out the Irish, but their experience should be enough to cover a -6 point spread. We’ll definitely be giving them home field advantage today.

We’re taking the Michigan St. point spread of -6 (-105) at BetOnline.

If you prefer the Irish, the best Notre Dame point spread is +6 (-105) at Bovada.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan St. Money Line

East Lansing is a tough place to visit and Notre Dame has yet to play a true road game this season (remember the Navy game was played on a neutral field). That, and an edge on talent makes Michigan the team to pick straight-up. With that said, none of the major books have posted their Notre Dame/Michigan money lines yet, so we can’t speak to value right now.

Notre Dame @ Michigan State Over/Under

Both of these teams are playing with high quality, full strength defenses. There probably won’t be a lot of scoring and although the over/under sounds reasonable, even 43.5 could be a tough number to hit. Because of solid defenses on both sides, we’re picking the under of 43.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com.
