#4 North Carolina Tar Heels vs. #1 Wisconsin Badgers – March Madness Sweet Sixteen

THE Wisconsin Badgers are attempting to reach the Final Four for the second consecutive year, but they have to get through the North Carolina Tar Heels first.

Wisconsin are the team everyone expects to give Kentucky a run for their money later in the tournament. The Badgers beat up on Costal Carolina (86-72) in the second round and I thought they played great in a win over Oregon (72-65) in the third round.

North Carolina were lucky to escape the second round with a win over Harvard (67-65), but they stepped up in the third round and beat Arkansas (87-78) comfortably. The Tar Heels have already improved on last year’s third round exit from the tourney.

We’re getting into the nitty-gritty of the NCAA basketball tournament, but there’s still a lot of time left. Bovada.lv is still running their 2015 March Madness bonus, which can net you a free bet of $250 (50% of your first deposit).

Tar Heels vs. Badgers money line, point spread and total

Almost everyone is betting on the Badgers to win the game, as 97% of the ML action is on them. The point spread market is basically split, as 54% of bets have been placed on the Tar Heels covering ATS. The public leans to the over as well – with 66% of the action.

Can UNC upset the Badgers in the Sweet Sixteen?

I’m surprised more people haven’t been betting on the Tar Heels to win. It’s easy to look ahead and picture Wisconsin vs. Kentucky in the Final Four, but the Tar Heels match-up well against Wisconsin and I expect the team from Chapel Hill to win this game.

The Tar Heels rank 17th in points scored (77.9 PPG), 12th in offensive rebounds (13.9 ORPG) and 2nd in assists (17.7 APG). The starters all provide consistent offense, which is rare in college basketball. Often teams have to rely on one or two players.

Marcus Paige leads UNC in scoring (14.1 PPG), assists (4.5 APG) and steals (1.7 SPG). Brice Johnson (12.9 PPG and 7.9 RPG) and Kennedy Meeks (11.6 PPG and 7.4 RPG) are both double-double threats every time they step onto the court.

J.P. Tokoto averages 8.4 PPG – the lowest average out of the five starters — but Tokoto stuffs the stat sheet in other areas. He has averaged 5.6 RPG, 4.3 APG and 1.5 SPG this season. You’re going to have a hard time finding a team as balanced as UNC.

Wisconsin don’t rank nearly as well offensively as North Carolina. The Badgers average 71.9 PPG (67th), 9.5 ORPG (262nd) and 12.7 APG (165th). Wisconsin attempt a lot of 3-pointers (713), but they’ve only made 255 of those attempts this season.

North Carolina are one of the best teams at defending the 3-point line in the country, as they only allow teams to hit at a 30% clip (12th). Wisconsin isn’t quite as deep as UNC, but they’ll have the best player on the court in Frank Kaminsky.

Kaminsky averaged 18.4 PPG this season, but in the tournament he’s averaging 21.5 PPG. Sam Dekker has played great through two games of the tourney too. Dekker is averaging 18.5 PPG in the tourney and the Tar Heels can’t forget about him on the court.

Defensively, the Badgers only allow 56.8 PPG (10th) and the Tar Heels allow 68.6 PPG (239th). However, the Tar Heels average more blocks and steals than Wisconsin. On top of that, UNC averages 27.1 DRPG (7th), so the Badgers won’t have many second chances.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Wisconsin Badgers picks

At 2/1 odds I’ll gladly bet on UNC to upset Wisconsin in the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday night. North Carolina have gone under the radar a bit this year, but when you check out their stats it shows you just how good they’ve been playing.

Plus, if Wisconsin can’t get off their 3-point shots they’ll be in deep trouble. This team relies on hoisting up a lot of 3-pointers and UNC defend against that exceptionally well. Wisconsin play tough defense, but they won’t be able to keep up with North Carolina.

I’d like to see the Tar Heels get out and push the pace too. Wisconsin like to set-up their half-court defense, but if UNC can push the basketball down the court quickly they’ll be able to catch the Badgers off guard and score some easy baskets.

The over/under is a tough market to predict. I expect the Badgers to struggle from deep, so therefore I lean to the under, but I really expect the final score to be within 3 points of the total. The best bet is on the Tar Heels ML, but the point spread is fine too.
