NFL Week 1 MNF Picks: HOU vs. NO & DEN vs. OAK

Houston Texans(0-0-0) @ New Orleans Saints(0-0-0)

  • Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome. New Orleans, LA
  • When: September 9, 2019 7:10 pm EST
  • Spread: Texans +7 (-115) vs. Saints -7 (-105)
  • Moneyline: Texans (+250) vs. Saints (-300)

In what has become a tradition, the NFL offers up a doubleheader on Monday Night Football (MNF) for the opening week of the regular season and this year is no different.

The New Orleans Saints (0-0) host the Houston Texans (0-0) in the first game of the night. The second game of the night will see the Oakland Raiders (0-0) hosting the Denver Broncos (0-0).

NFL Week 1: Texans vs. Saints Betting Lines and Predictions

Texans vs Saints Week 1 2019This is an intriguing match-up that’s tough to predict for multiple reasons.

The Saints have the edge on paper and are coming off an impressive 13-3 regular season record in 2018. They have gone 13-3 at home during the regular season the past two seasons.

However, they haven’t won a season-opener since defeating the Falcons (23-17) in 2013.

The Saints lost several key contributors in RB Mark Ingram, C Max Unger and TE Benjamin Watson, but they filled in the holes with several signings including TE Jared Cook and RB Latavius Murray.

Drew Brees has plenty of weapons again on offense with RB Alvin Kamara and WR Michael Thomas leading the way and they should average 30+ PPG again, after scoring 31.5 PPG (3rd) last season.

The Texans have had a rough off-season. RB Lamar Miller tore his ACL and MCL against Dallas in a preseason game and DE Jadeveon Clowney was just traded to the Seahawks a few days ago.

Houston have had a lot of turnover in the secondary and on the offensive line as well.

QB Deshaun Watson was sacked a league-leading 62 times last season, but OL Matt Kalil and a pair of rookie tackles (Tytus Howard and Max Scharping) aren’t likely to improve the o-line much.

The secondary also needed to improve after ranking 28th against the pass (260.4 PYPG).

I’m not confident in that happening either, as the Texans lost DBs Tyrann Mathieu, Kareem Jackson and Kevin Johnson. They replaced them with DBs Tashaun Gipson and Bradley Roby.

The Saints secondary was even worse last season, as they ranked 29th (268.9 PYPG).

With that being said, my best bet in the first game is on the over/under.

The Superdome is going to be rocking on Monday night for the Saints home opener. Both QBs are going to have huge games and plenty of points should be scored by both teams.

Thomas and DeAndre Hopkins are going to battle it out. Both teams were terrible defending WR1s last season. If you’re a DFS player, both WRs are definitely in play, especially on Monday slates.

NFL Week 1: Broncos vs. Raiders Betting Lines and Predictions

Broncos vs Raiders Week 1 2019When: Monday, September 9th 2019 at 10:15PM ET
Where: RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland, California
Watch: ESPN

Both the Broncos and Raiders missed out on the NFL playoffs last season.

The Broncos finished the season 6-10, while the Raiders were an even worse 4-12. Both teams need to improve, but that won’t be easy with the Chiefs and Chargers in the AFC West.

Last season, these two split the season series. Denver won at home in week 2 (20-19), while Oakland won on MNF at home in week 16 (27-14). The home team has covered ATS in five of the last six.

Vic Fangio is the new head coach in Denver and Joe Flacco will be taking over at QB. I don’t expect Flacco to help the Broncos win games and that’ll become apparent to everyone in several weeks.

Denver also had a lot of departures, including four offensive linemen, three linebackers and three defensive backs. The Broncos are still in rebuilding mode and will struggle this year.

Jon Gruden has had some time to build the Raiders roster how he wants and now he has to start winning games, especially with the Raiders moving to Las Vegas for the start of next season.

Derek Carr has a lot more weapons at his disposal. We all know about WR Antonio Brown, but they also brought in WRs Tyrell Williams, Ryan Grant, J.J Nelson and TE Luke Wilson.

Marshawn Lynch is gone, but rookie RB Josh Jacobs could become the franchise RB Oakland needs to help compliment the passing attack, but this team will rely heavily on airing it out.

After ranking 28th in points scored (18.1 PPG) and 23rd in yards gained (336.2 YPG), Oakland should definitely improve upon those numbers with the amount of talent they brought in.

I could be wrong, but I expect the Raiders to improve and Denver to regress further in 2019.

With that being said, the best bet in the late game on Monday night is on the Raiders money line.

The home team has dominated this H2H series and that’s not going to change. Gruden has to start winning games and Carr needs a big season if he wants to remain an Oakland Raider.
