Bet On 2020 NFL MVP WinnerWith the sports world essentially shut down because of the coronavirus, there isn’t much to wager on. However, we can begin to look at the NFL futures markets for the upcoming season.

In this article, we’re going to analyze the 2020 NFL MVP futures market and come up with our best bet.

Lamar Jackson is fresh off winning the 2019 NFL MVP award. He became only the second player in NFL history to win the award unanimously after a record-breaking season from the QB. Jackson finished the regular season with 3127 passing yards (36 TDs) and 1206 rushing yards (7 TDs).

Will a Quarterback Win the MVP Award Again?

A QB has been crowned the NFL MVP in each of the last seven seasons. If we go back even further we can see that a QB has won this award in 17 of the last 20 seasons.

Betting against a QB to win hasn’t been a profitable proposition in recent seasons.

Here are the top contenders to win the 2020 NFL MVP award:

Mahomes won the MVP in 2018 after throwing for 5097 yards (50 TDs), but his numbers were down considerably last season (4031 Passing Yards / 26 TDs). He missed two games with an injury (Week 8/9). In week 10 he threw 3 TDs, but he failed to throw 3 TDs again in a game the rest of the season.

Jackson shocked everyone in his sophomore season, but defenses are going to be ready for him now and I expect his numbers to take a dive just like Mahomes’ numbers did after winning MVP.

Wilson is becoming less mobile with age, but he’s coming off a big season. He threw for 4110 yards (31 TDs) with only 5 INTs. However, it’s unlikely he can put up big enough numbers to win MVP.

Ever since DeAndre Hopkins was traded to the Cardinals a lot of fans have been hyping up Murray as an MVP candidate. Could he do what Jackson did in his sophomore season? It’s possible.

In his rookie campaign, Murray threw for 3722 yards (20 TDs) and rushed for 544 yards (4 TDs). He’ll need to cut down on turnovers (12 INTs / 2 Fumbles), but his numbers should definitely improve.

I still can’t believe Brady went to the Buccaneers, but his MVP hopes have gained steam. Brady is going to have a lot of weapons at his disposal, including WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Jameis Winston led the NFL in passing yards (5109) and ranked #2 in passing TDs (33). I can only imagine what Brady is going to be able to do with this offense. At 10/1, Brady offers some value.

Will a Running Back Win the NFL MVP Award in 2020?

The last non-QB to win the NFL MVP award was Adrian Peterson (2012). That was the year when AP rushed for 2097 yards (12 TDs) while hauling in 40 receptions for 217 yards (1 TD).

I’m not sure we’ll ever see another RB exceed 2000+ rushing yards in a single season again.

Last season, Christian McCaffrey (+3300 to Win MVP) rushed for 1387 yards (15 TDs) while gaining 1005 receiving yards (4 TDs) and he wasn’t even close to winning the MVP award.

McCaffrey would likely need 1600+ rushing yards, 1000+ receiving yards and 25+ TDs to even be in consideration at the end of the regular season and he’d need the top QBs to struggle a bit.

However you can get McCaffrey at 33/1 odds, which is a nice price on the league’s best RB.

Defensive superstars are becoming more prevalent in recent years. Maybe it’s time for a defensive player to win MVP. The last player to do that was Lawrence Taylor (Linebacker) in 1986.

Aaron Donald, Nick Bosa, Khalil Mack and J.J. Watt are all priced at 100/1 to win the MVP.

Best Bet to Win the 2020 NFL MVP Award

I know Brady has been trending down in recent years, but I believe he would have retired if he didn’t think he could still put up big numbers and now he has the weapons to light the league on fire.

The Buccaneers defense is still horrendous and they’ll need the offense to score a lot. With a weak running game, look for Brady to be airing it out regularly with his new team.

If he can stay healthy and play a full season, he could win his fourth MVP award.
