Syracuse vs. Dayton Picks#10 Syracuse Orange vs. #7 Dayton Flyers – March Madness First Round

When: Friday, March 18th 2016 at 12:15pm ET
Where: Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri
Watch: CBS

THE Syracuse Orange (19-13) were legitimately surprised to get an at-large bid into the tournament. They will come into the tournament on a three-game losing streak. The Dayton Flyers (25-7) finished the regular season in first place in the A10, but they were eliminated in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

I expect Syracuse to play with a chip on their shoulder, as everyone is doubting them. All the talk is how they shouldn’t even be in the tournament. You can bet they’ll use that negativity as motivation. Syracuse are also a battle-tested, experienced team come March. They made a run to the Final Four in 2013.

Dayton has made the big dance three years in a row, after not making it between 2010-2013. The Flyers won two games in 2014 and one game in 2015. One of those wins in 2014 was against Syracuse (55-53). Syracuse will have revenge on their mind, as no one will want to suffer a similar defeat.

Syracuse are getting more action right now. Early bets have come in on the Orange money line (80%+), while the point spread action has been about 50/50. Nearly 80% of the bets on the game total have been on under, which is no surprise. When these two teams met in 2014, they combined to score 108 points.

Stats Pack

Both teams play hard defense. Syracuse employs a frustrating zone defense and Dayton grind you out. This will likely ensure this game stays close, especially when you consider that neither offense is efficient. Syracuse is ranked better on the KenPom rankings and have played better against top competition.

Syracuse Orange vs. Dayton Flyers predictions

Neither of these teams have a superstar to lean on, instead they have a lot of depth. Both teams come into the match-up with four players averaging double-digits in points. Michael Gbinije (17.8 PPG) leads the Orange in scoring, while Charles Cooke (15.7 PPG) leads the way for the Flyers.

Syracuse need big games from Malachi Richardson and Trevor Cooney. Both players average over 34.0 MPG and 12.5 PPG, but they’ve been poor from the field all season. Dayton are strong on the defensive glass and don’t allow many second opportunities, so Syracuse can’t afford throwing up ill-advised shots.

Dayton shoot 46% from the field, but only 34.7% on 3s. Syracuse rank among the best at defending the 3-point line, so the Flyers will likely need to shoot 50%+ from the field to keep it close. That’ll put the pressure on senior Dyshawn Pierre (13.0 PPG and 8.6 RPG) who does a lot of his damage in the paint.

I’d be surprised is this wasn’t a low scoring game. I don’t expect the total to come anywhere near 131 points and I’ll gladly bet under, despite the public betting the same way. Both defenses are strong and neither team has a consistent scorer. Both teams will have some nerves with this being the first round.
