NCAA College Basketball Saturday Betting Preview

Date: Saturday, February 7th 2015

What a slate in college hoops this weekend! Almost all of the top 25 will be in action on Saturday with the premiere match-up being #9 Louisville vs. #3 Virginia. The other game that I’m looking forward to watching is #10 Notre Dame vs. #4 Duke.

Betting lines will be out by Friday morning for most games at the Bovada Sportsbook.

The majority of teams have roughly ten regular season games left on the schedule at this point. Conference tournaments are going to be here before we know it and than the big dance (March Madness). With NFL over, I’ll be pushing my focus to covering CBB.

#9 Louisville Cardinals vs. #3 Virginia Cavaliers Picks

Start Time: Saturday at 7:00pm ET
Location: John Paul Jones Arena
Watch: ESPN

Louisville 19-3 (7-2 ACC) has a chance to pull closer to Virginia 20-1 (8-1 ACC) in the ACC with a road win. The Cardinals have posted a 2-3 record against top 25 competition with wins over the Buckeyes and Tar Heels – both of which were home games.

The Cavaliers lost their first game of the season last weekend against Duke at home, but they’ve already bounced back with a road win over the Tar Heels. This should be a defensive battle, as Virginia allows 50.8 PPG (1st) and Louisville allows 58.8 PPG (21st).

On offense the Cardinals average considerably more points (73.1 PPG – 61st) than the Cavaliers (68.3 PPG – 153rd), but a lot of those numbers for Louisville are padded by some big blowouts on inferior opposition. Against tougher teams Louisville struggles to score.

Virginia will play zone on defense and frustrate the Cardinals. Montrezl Harrell will wreak havoc in the paint for Louisville, but if he gets doubled up, the Cardinals lack shooters. Virginia protects the basketball better than any team and they don’t allow easy points.

#10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. #4 Duke Blue Devils Picks

Start Time: Saturday at 1:00pm ET
Location: Cameron Indoor Stadium
Watch: CBS

We have another big ACC game in this one, as Notre Dame 21-3 (9-2 ACC) plays Duke 19-3 (6-3 ACC). This is a rematch that I’m sure the Blue Devils have been anticipating. It was only a week ago when Duke lost on the road against the Fighting Irish (77-73).

Jerian Grant finished with 23 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks in the first H2H meeting. These two teams both rank in the top 10 in scoring, as the Blue Devils average 80.6 PPG (10th) and the Fighting Irish average 81.2 PPG (8th).

Notre Dame is having a great season, but they have losses against Providence and Pittsburgh that make you question this team at times. Duke is a good team, but anytime Jahlil Okafor has a poor game this team seems to struggle to get anything going.

Okafor had 22 points and 17 rebounds last week against ND and that still wasn’t enough to win. Duke has more depth, but I’m a fan of what the Fighting Irish have in South Bend. Miami showed us that Duke is beatable at home and I’m currently leaning to ND.

#19 Baylor Bears vs. #15 West Virginia Mountaineers Picks

Start Time: Saturday at 12:00pm ET
Location: WVU Coliseum
Watch: ESPNU

This is the first of two H2H meetings this season between these two Big 12 foes. Baylor 17-5 (5-4 Big 12) has been bad in conference play, but they’ll look to overtake West Virginia 18-4 (6-3 Big 12) in the conference standings with a win at the WVU Coliseum.

Baylor has the talent to make noise this year in the big tournament, but they’re not dominant enough to win games on a consistent basis against quality opponents. The Bears are playing great though, as they just thrashed Texas (83-60) and TCU (77-57).

The Bears are a deep team with seven players averaging over 18.0 MPG and they rely on production from everyone. WVU loves to play a big rotation also, as they love to bang bodies down low. Ten players on the Mountaineers are averaging 13.0+ MPG.

We have two teams with differing strategies. West Virginia excels offensively, as they score 75.9 PPG (24th) whereas Baylor is much stronger defensively, as they’re only allowing 58.2 PPG (18th). Since January Baylor is 1-3 in road games and that’ll worsen this week.

#24 Georgetown Hoyas vs. #7 Villanova Wildcats Picks

Start Time: Saturday at 2:00pm ET
Location: Wells Fargo Center
Watch: FOX

Villanova 20-2 (7-2 Big East) will host Georgetown 15-7 (7-4 Big East) in another game between two top 25 teams. With four games on the schedule between top 25 teams we’re in for a great Saturday of basketball and I’m sure this match-up won’t disappoint.

The Hoyas already beat the Wildcats at home (78-58) last month, but don’t expect a similar result. Villanova is still perfect at home this season. The Wildcats are definitely the better team. Villanova scores 75.3 PPG (30th) and allows 60.6 PPG (50th) on average.

Georgetown scores an average of 71.9 PPG (81st) while allowing 64.4 PPG (129th). In the first game between these two teams nothing went right for the Wildcats. Villanova ended up shooting 34.1% from the field (14-41) and they committed 17 turnovers.

We also saw the Hoyas shoot 51.1% from the field and 50.0% from beyond the arc, which are both above their season averages in the shooting department. Since the win Georgetown is 2-2 whereas the Wildcats have gone 3-0 since losing to the Hoyas.
