Chennai Super Kings will look to make it three wins from three when they take on a hapless Mumbai Indians outfit on Friday night in Match 12 of the 2015 Indian Premier League season.

Having scraped past Delhi Daredevils by a single run in their opening fixture, the Super Kings backed up with an easy 45-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad just two days later.

The class and experience of Brendon McCullum (100) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (53) shone through in that game as Chennai posted what proved to be an insurmountable 209 – the highest innings score of IPL 2015 thus far.

Just as impressive was the bowling attack’s balance of economy and incision against a dangerous Sunrisers lineup featuring David Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson and Lokesh Rahul.

Only Ravindra Jadeja conceded more than nine runs per over, while Ravichandran Ashwin (1 for 22) and Dwayne Bravo (2 for 25) gave up just one boundary between them in their eight overs combined.

Last season’s leading wicket-taker, Mohit Sharma, has also enjoyed a promising start to the campaign, while veteran paceman Ashish Nehra starred against the Daredevils with match-winning figures of 3 for 25.

Thus, the IPL’s glamour boys have plenty of reasons to smile as they prepare to face a winless Indians side that hasn’t clicked at all so far.

Mumbai have been comfortably beaten at every turn thus far, despite some excellent individual showings from the likes of Corey Anderson, Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma with the bat.

One could point the finger at a lack of support for Lasith Malinga, as Ricky Ponting’s bowling unit is averaging less than four wickets per game in 2015.

Things got a whole lot worse for the Indians on Tuesday night, and not just because they came undone against a Rajasthan Royals side inspired by the superb Steven Smith.

Aaron Finch was forced to retire hurt just 10 runs into his innings after injuring his hamstring, meaning Lendl Simmons will most likely come in for his first hit of the season.

While the West Indian is a more than handy replacement, Mumbai fans must be frustrated by the lack of stability after Ambati Rayudu and Aditya Tare were dropped only two games in.

There is also the question of how the eventual XI will line up. R Sharma has fallen down the order after starting in the opening slot, with wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and Unmukt Chand moving into the top three.

Coach Ponting insisted on Wednesday that it wasn’t all doom and gloom in the Mumbai camp, but he did admit his charges would need to show more consistency and self-belief if they were to upset last year’s semifinalists.

“As a group we are lacking a little bit in confidence at the moment. We have not got off to a great start so far in the tournament,” the former Australia captain told the press.

“Looking at the last couple of games we played some really good cricket. We have to make sure we do that for the entire 40 overs and not only for 25 or 30 overs as we have been doing.”

He continued: “I have this feeling that a really good performance is round the corner. We have to make sure we work hard when we train tomorrow.

“We are playing a very good Chennai outfit… We need to be at our absolute best to win that game.”

Match predictions

Results – Chennai Super Kings ($1.45 at Bovada.com)
Highest opening partnership – Chennai Super Kings ($1.69 at Crown Bet)
Most match sixes – Chennai Super Kings ($1.66 at Bet 365)

You can’t look past the Super Kings in any of the major IPL match betting markets. Even though Finch’s injury may prove a blessing in disguise for Mumbai, given the Aussie’s distinct lack of form, they will struggle sorely if the likes of Anderson and Pollard are left to do all the hard work again. Chennai are the team to back in just about every field.

IPL betting for top team batsman

Mumbai Indians – Corey Anderson ($7.00 at Bet365)

Despite playing in the lower middle order, the New Zealander has been Mumbai’s brightest light with two half-tons in three outings. He was vital in keeping the Indians competitive against Rajasthan, and $7 odds look very good value for a player who is fast becoming one of the more valuable all-round cricketers on the planet.

Chennai Super Kings – Brendon McCullum ($3.50 at Bodog.com)

Another Kiwi, but this one is the clear favourite to top the match batting charts. McCullum smashed a signature 100 in Chennai’s win over Sunrisers last week, taking apart a talented attack that included fellow countryman Trent Boult and noted IPL wicket-hog Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He’s just about the most damaging opener in world cricket – how can you bet against him?

Picks for top team bowler

Mumbai Indians – Lasith Malinga ($3.50 at Bet365.com)

Say what you will, but the Sri Lanka slinger’s record in Twenty20 cricket is outstanding. He looks in good enough touch, with three wickets in his last two IPL games, and is far and away the most likely to trouble the Super Kings’ star bats.

Chennai Super Kings – Dwayne Bravo ($4.00 at Bet365)

In a strong bowling outfit that includes R Ashwin and M Sharma, the West Indies all-rounder has been the star attraction thus far with four wickets in two matches. He was especially impressive against Hyberabad, taking 2 for 25 without conceding a single boundary in four overs.
