Two AFC East teams face off on a rare Saturday Night matchup in Week 15, only one of them still playoff-relevant. It’s the Miami Dolphins against the New York Jets.

The Dolphins are one of the most exciting and unexpected storylines of the 2016/17 season, enjoying a spectacular six-game win streak after a slow start to the season. Over the last two weeks the Dolphins have ceded their Wild Card spot to the Denver Broncos, but they are still very much in the hunt.

The Jets, on the other hand, have been out of playoff contention for a while now, and don’t have much to play for. The line between game time and practice time has blurred, with the final four games of the season being given over to unproven second-year player Bryce Petty for a tryout at quarterback.

Even though one team has something to play for and one team doesn’t, though, when division rivals square off on national television there’s always the potential for an entertaining game. Let’s take a look at these two teams individually and preview the betting markets offering the best value.

The Miami Dolphins are struggling to regain their identity

MIA at NYJ Wk 15 PicksMiami’s win streak was a house of cards, with the team facing a slew of bad defenses. As I predicted in Week 13, when they did finally face a top 10 defense in the Ravens, Miami’s offense got exposed big time, and they lost big.

Losing Ryan Tannehill for an extended period of time to MCL and ACL sprains doesn’t help either, despite people saying that he’s more of a game manager. While the ‘fins did bounce back from their loss to the Ravens with a win over the Cardinals, that’s not saying much.

Without Tannehill in the lineup, and with a relatively stout New York Jets run defense, there’s a good argument to be made that the Dolphins will not score a lot of points in this matchup, making a case for taking the under, listed at 38 at the Bovada sportsbook.

The New York Jets set to jet into the off season

It’s hard to remember the last time Jets fans had cause to be truly excited about their team. You have to go back more than five years to remember their last playoff game, and you have to go back to last season to remember the last time they had a record above .500.

The Jets offense has been abysmal this year, and ranks near the bottom of the league in all categories. They’ve gone through multiple stretches of being unable to score a touchdown for multiple games, and are on pace to score more than a dozen fewer touchdowns than they did last year. Last week it took them nearly 55 minutes to score a touchdown against the 1–11 San Francisco 49ers.

Combine all this together with the fact that they will continue to try out second-year quarterback Bryce Petty while a healthy Ryan Fitzpatrick rides the bench, and it makes a pretty strong argument for interested parties to take the under in this matchup. Consider throwing the under on Dolphins/Jets into a two-team teaser with the under on Ravens/Eagles: two inexperienced quarterbacks going against two stout defenses won’t do much to push the total above 45 and 58, respectively.

Dolphins at Jets over/under and point spread predictions

Your best bet in Dolphins vs. Jets is on the under (listed at 38 at the Bovada sportsbook) and the Dolphins against the spread (listed at -3 at the Bovada sportsbook). My prediction? This game ends up at 20–7, Dolphins on top of the Jets.

Two backup quarterbacks with very little game-time experience this season doesn’t exactly provide much of an argument that this game will be a shootout. The Dolphins are historically bad in night games, and the Jets are just plain bad.

The Dolphins playing to keep their playoff hopes alive doesn’t provide much incentive either, as this team is floundering to regain the identity they had during their 6-game win streak and unlikely to find it. If you get the opportunity to bet against the Dolphins to make the playoffs, do (go for Denver and Baltimore to make the playoffs, instead; the teams with the good defenses always come out in December).
