Manchester City v Newcastle Betting Tips

Manchester City v Newcastle Matchday #1 Preview

When: Monday, August 19th 2013 at 8:00pm GMT
Where: Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England

Manchester City and Newcastle don’t kick-off their Premier League campaign until Monday. The match was initially scheduled to be played on Saturday, but the fixture was pushed back because the match is going to be broadcasted live on Sky Sports. It’s likely the match won’t be overly competitive.

Latest 1X2, AH & Over/Under Odds

Man City is a big favourite to win the match at the Etihad on Monday night and there isn’t much value in the 1X2 market. Bookies expect the match to be high scoring as well and that’s because of the recent H2H matches between these two teams. The best bet in this market is on Man City -1.5 (1.95).

The Citizens v The Magpies Match Preview

After winning the Premier League trophy in the 2011/12 season, City has to be disappointed with last season. They ended up in 2nd place, which is great, but they didn’t challenge Manchester United for the title and finished the campaign 11 points back of them.

I can’t wait to see the new look City squad. Jovetic, Navas, Fernandinho and Negredo will all play major roles on the squad. This should be a much higher scoring team this campaign than the one last season, but it may take a few matches to gel together.

Newcastle flirted with relegation last season and I expect them to again. The Magpies only scored 1.18 GPG last season while the league average was 1.40 and they also had one of the worst goal differentials (-23). This year they need to score more goals.

The Magpies were held quiet in the transfer market until getting Loic Remy on loan from QPR last week. After Demba Ba left the team last campaign Newcastle struggled to find a consistent goalscorer. Remy will get a chance with Newcastle to shine.

However, Remy is currently dealing with a calf injury and he has been ruled out of the match on Monday already. Without Remy I think the Magpies are going to struggle to generate any offence against the best defensive team last season (34 GA).

City only conceded 15 goals at the Etihad during league play in 2012/13 and the same defence is back. Newcastle has never won a match at the Etihad (0-2-7) and they’re 0-0-7 in their L7 against City. The two meetings last season were both blowouts.

In the H2H last season City won 3-1 at St James Park and then followed that up with a 4-0 victory at the Etihad. Newcastle had no chance in either match and with expectations high for Man City this season that should mean trouble for Newcastle on Monday.

With Mancini out the door I think City will benefit, as Pellegrini will have the squad better prepared for matches. Often times last season players were misused. Pellegrini is respected by his players and I see them starting the campaign strong.

The other train of thought is that the Citizens will have some growing pains early in the year while they develop chemistry. The problem is that Newcastle isn’t going to put up much opposition and with Remy ruled out this should be another blowout.

While City has to improve their scoring total from last season they did do better at the Etihad. They averaged 2.16 GPG at home compared to just 1.32 in away matches. City was the only team in the league last season that scored in every home match.

Man City v Newcastle Best Bets

It looks like Sergio Aguero may not be fit for this match, but it looks liked Edin Dzeko should get the start. During the preseason City has played a 4-4-2 formation primarily and if Dzeko does get the start he’s going to have a lot of scoring chances.

David Silva and Navas are both great set-up men and Dzeko should benefit from that early this season. I recommend waiting to find out what the starting line-up will be for City before betting on goalscorers, but by the looks of things Dzeko will start.

City scored first in 60.5% of their matches and they were leading at HT in 42.1% of their matches last season. The 1X2 market isn’t interesting to me at the short odds, but getting City in the HT/FT market at close to even money is a bet I’m willing to back.

Last season City took 1H leads and went on to win both matches easily. With the new look squad I expect Pellegrini to have his team ready from the start of the match. Newcastle has a terrible record at the Etihad and I’ll gladly take City to win HT/FT.
