EPL matchweek 30

Kick-Off: Sunday, March 22nd 2015 at 9:30am ET
Stadium: Anfield in Liverpool, England
TV: TSN, NBC Sports & Sky Sports 1

LIVERPOOL will attempt to move into the top four on the league table with a win against Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield, as only two points separates these two.

The Red Devils are sitting in 4th place on the league table with 56 points, while Liverpool are 5th place with 54 points. The Reds have an 8-5-2 record at Anfield and United are 4-7-3 in away matches.

United have won three matches in a row against Sunderland (2-0), Newcastle (1-0) and Tottenham (3-0).

However, Liverpool have been the best team since late 2014. Liverpool are 10-3-0 since December 21st 2014 and they’ve been able to keep a clean sheet in eight of those matches.

The Reds have managed to erase a terrible start to the Premier League campaign.

Liverpool are favored at Anfield and based on the Reds current form – I’m surprised they aren’t priced shorter. The over/under is a tough market to handicap in this match. Both teams are tough to score against, but most H2H matches boast plenty of goals.

Can the Red Devils snap Liverpool’s unbeaten streak?

When was the last time Liverpool lost? Liverpool’s last loss was on December 14th 2014 against Man. Utd. (3-0). The loss was away at Old Trafford and you know the Reds want revenge at Anfield, especially with the top four race heating up.

The Red Devils are banged up at multiple positions and their chances to win this match appear bleak. Robin Van Persie will miss his fifth match in a row due to injury and James Wilson is doubtful after he got injured in the U21 clash against Everton.

Louis van Gaal will have to decide his plan of attack. The good news is Angel Di Maria is back from serving a suspension and he could feature in an attacking role with Wayne Rooney. Radamel Falcao may be in the starting XI too, although his form is poor.

Falcao only has four goals all season for the Red Devils. Rooney leads United with 11 goals and he has scored three goals during the Red Devils active winning streak. Liverpool are relatively healthy and will be able to put out a strong line-up for this huge match.

The Reds aren’t a high-scoring team, as they only average 1.48 GPG (1.60 GPG at Anfield). Liverpool have been winning with defence and they’re only conceding 1.03 GPG (0.93 GPG at Anfield). If the Reds score early and get a lead it’s tough to come back on them.

Daniel Sturridge only has three goals – all of which have come at Anfield. Sturridge will start upfront, but Liverpool needs him to get on the score sheet more often. Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling lead Liverpool in goals with six each.

Gerrard will likely feature in the match, as he always gives United fits. Gerrard has netted seven goals in the last 11 H2H matches against Manchester United in league play. Sturridge has scored twice against United too in just three career starts.

United averages 2.0 GPG at Old Trafford, but in away matches they score 1.21 GPG and concede 1.14 GPG.

Liverpool vs. Man Utd correct score betting

I’m betting on the same score line as last year’s match at Anfield. Liverpool won 1-0 and that’s the most likely result. Man. Utd. have a lot of talent, but the injuries upfront are going to hurt their chances when they play against top competition like the Reds.

Liverpool know they can frustrate Rooney and United won’t have an answer. United haven’t conceded since losing to Swansea (2-1) four matches ago and they’ve really tightened up on defence. However, I expect Liverpool to breakthrough once and net a goal.

Total goals betting – over/under tips

My next punt on the match is under 2.5 goals. I know there was a logjam upfront for United when Van Persie was healthy, but without him in the starting XI it makes the Red Devils easier to defend. United has struggled in away matches all season as well.

Liverpool conceded three times at Old Trafford and were embarrassed in December. They’ll do everything they can to keep United off of the score sheet. With the importance of this match – I don’t expect either team to push the pace and open up the pitch.

First goalscorer betting tips

The best odds on Sturridge to score 1st in Liverpool v Manchester United are 6.0 at Paddy Power. Sturridge scored the only goal when Liverpool beat United 1-0 at Anfield last season. He scored in the 4th minute and neither team scored the rest of the match.

If you expect United to open up the scoring, your best bet would be Rooney to score first (7.5), although Ashley Young (21.0) is an interesting play too. Young will likely feature in the starting line-up and he just scored two matches ago against Newcastle.
