Will Chris Gayle power Bangalore to IPL glory?

Eliminator – 8:00pm local time on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at MCA Stadium, Pune

Royal Challengers Bangalore – $1.58 at Crownbet.com
Rajasthan Royals – $2.50 at www.Bovada.com

The final four will be whittled down to three on Wednesday night when Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals face off in the 2015 Indian Premier League eliminator.

The winner will earn the right to face either Chennai Super Kings or Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier, while the loser will have to settle for a fourth-place finish.

RCB are the runaway favourites to progress, paying $1.58 to win in the IPL head-to-head betting at online bookmaker CrownBet.

They may well feel they deserved a spot in the top two. Not only was their final group game against Delhi Daredevils washed out, so too was their last meeting with the Royals on April 29 – and with a first innings score of 7/200 on the board, to boot.

Nevertheless, Bangalore enter the 2015 IPL finals as one of the form teams in the competition, having lost only two of their last 10 fixtures.

Much of that record is owed to Mitchell Starc, who has taken India by storm with 18 wickets in only 10 innings after missing the first few games of the season through injury.

But the Australian left-arm quick hasn’t done it all on his own. Yuzvendra Chahal has been the most dangerous spinner in the tournament, ensnaring 19 victims at a world-class strike rate of 12.2 balls per wicket, while Harshal Patel (14 wickets) and David Weise (13 wickets) have provided excellent seam-bowling support.

And then there’s that famous Royal Challengers top order, with Virat Kohli (481 runs at 53.44), AB de Villiers (446 runs at 49.55) and Chris Gayle (423 runs at 42.30) all firmly entrenched among the top 10 runscorers of IPL 2015.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has several thousand reasons to make amends in Pune after he was fined 20% of his match fee over a conduct violation during last Friday’s win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Otherwise, it’s all very sunny over in Bengaluru as coach Daniel Vettori prepares his troops for an opponent which blasted its way back into title contention at the 11th hour.

It took a true captain’s knock from Shane Watson to halt Rajasthan Royals’ seemingly inevitable slide out of the playoff spots, the Australian all-rounder smashing 104 to secure a priceless win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the final league game.

But that result doesn’t hide the fact that the Royals come into the knockout rounds with just two wins for their last nine games, which is why Bodog sports book has them as rank outsiders at $2.50 IPL match odds.

It’s not as though they don’t have the talent. Ajinkya Rahane sits second only to David Warner in the 2015 IPL batting charts, and we all know what the Aussie trio of Watson, James Faulkner and Steven Smith are capable of.

There’s also plenty of upside to this Royals squad, as Deepak Hooda and wicketkeeper Sanju Samson are both first XI players at only 20 years of age, but the question is whether they can deliver in the here and now.

The glaring weakness for head coach Paddy Upton has been a lack of premium wicket-takers, although it could be that his strike bowlers have timed their runs to absolute perfection.

Chris Morris comes into the elimination match in red-hot form, having taken seven wickets in the last two games, while Dhawal Kulkarni – still not a guaranteed starter – has now strung together four two-wicket hauls in seven appearances.

Those are the only two regular Royals bowlers who are striking at less than 20 balls per wicket, however, so they will need much better support from the likes of Faulkner, Stuart Binny and Pravin Tambe if they are to trouble RCB’s explosive batting lineup.

Possible team selections

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (C), Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Mandeep Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Sarfaraz Khan, Harshal Patel, David Weise, Mitchell Starc, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sreenath Aravind

Rajasthan Royals: Shane Watson (C), Ajinkya Rahane, Steven Smith, Karun Nair, Sanju Samson, James Faulkner, Deepak Hooda, Stuart Binny, Chris Morris, Ankit Sharma, Dhawal Kulkarni, Pravin Tambe

Match predictions

Result – Royal Challengers Bangalore to win ($1.58 at CrownBet.com)
Highest first six overs – Royal Challengers Bangalore ($1.68 at CrownBet)
Highest opening partnership – Rajasthan Royals ($2.00 at www.Bet365.com)

Even after Rajasthan’s big win over KKR, you have to get on Bangalore here. With the possible exception of a middle order that hasn’t been tested much over the last fortnight or so, RCB are firing on all cylinders in every department. If you want some value, though, a sneaky wager on Rahane and Watson to outscore Kohli and Gayle is well worth a punt.

2015 IPL top batsman betting

Royal Challengers Bangalore – AB de Villiers ($4.00 at Bovada)

While the opening pair of Kohli and Gayle are paying $3.75 or less at most sports betting sites, de Villiers offers a nice little edge at first drop. The South African star has missed in his last couple of digs, but you can’t overlook a guy who plundered 133 not out against the in-form Mumbai Indians less than two weeks ago.

Rajasthan Royals – Steve Smith ($4.80 at www.Crownbet.com)

It’s safe to say that Smith’s incredible international form has not quite carried over into the IPL Twenty20 season. Still, this is a guy who has a very handy knack of playing the big knocks when they are needed most, and he’s definitely the most likely bet behind short-priced favourites Rahane and Watson.

Best IPL value bets for top bowler

Royal Challengers Bangalore – Yuzvendra Chahal ($4.50 at Bodog.com)

While Starc is the obvious danger man, it is actually Chahal who leads the RCB bowling records in 2015. The 24-year-old leg spinner’s lust for wickets is a refreshing site in T20 cricket, and a strike rate of 12.2 this season shows that his willingness to give the ball some air regularly pays dividends.

Rajasthan Royals – Dhawal Kulkarni ($5.00 at Bet365.com)

Kulkarni has been something of a quiet achiever in the Royals bowling unit. An unassuming medium pacer, he leads his side for strike rates (16.9) and is one of only two Rajasthan players to have taken 10+ wickets this season. At $5 odds, this could be a super IPL value bet.
