Hyderabad vs. Kolkata best IPL odds and value bets

IPLMatch 19 – 4:00pm local time on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Visakhapatnam

Sunrisers Hyderabad – $2.35 at Bovada
Kolkata Knight Riders – $1.64 at CrownBet.com

IT’S not quite panic stations just yet, but the 2015 Indian Premier League season is only a few weeks old and already Sunrisers Hyderabad find themselves on the outer of the playoff chase.

The newest of the IPL franchises has managed only one victory thus far – an eight-wicket trouncing of Royal Challengers Bangalore – that has since been nulled by narrow defeats to Rajasthan Royals and a resurgent Delhi Daredevils side.

Probably the most frustrating thing for head coach Tom Moody is that his charges have failed to convert promising starts into big runs. Against Delhi, for instance, seven players reached double figures but not one went on to reach 50.

There’s no denying the talent in the Hyderabad squad, despite Kevin Pietersen withdrawing to focus on first-class cricket. David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan make for a fearsome opening pair, while the likes of Lokesh Rahul, Eoin Morgan, Kane Williamson, Naman Ojha and Ravi Bopara also boast significant Twenty20 credentials.

The Sunrisers bowling unit has plenty of star quality, too. Most sides would dream of having Trent Boult and Dale Steyn fighting for a starting berth, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Ashish Reddy are all consistent IPL T20 performers.

Perhaps the departure of Amit Mishra has left them short on genuine spin options, with Karn Sharma now plowing a lone furrow, but the big question for Moody and Co. is whether to go with Steyn, or Boult, or to sacrifice an overseas batsman and play both.

Steyn said this week on the official IPL website that he had no qualms about riding the pine behind his Kiwi teammate, but he admitted he would relish the opportunity to bowl in tandem with one of world cricket’s form players.

“I have got no problems losing out on a place to Trent,” said the South Africa star, who returned solid figures of 1 for 27 against Delhi in his first outing of the season.

“He was the in-form bowler coming out of the World Cup and it would have been silly if he was the guy on the bench at the start of the IPL.”

Steyn added: “I think bowling alongside Trent would be amazing, especially after the kind of World Cup that he has had.

“You kind of just feed off that energy. I am a player who enjoys playing with players that have got good energy about them.”

Sunrisers will need all the good vibes they can muster as they tackle a Kolkata Knight Riders outfit which has got its mojo working after a slow start.

The defending IPL champions lost two of their opening three fixtures, including a shock defeat to the lowly Royal Challengers Bangalore, but have since bounced back with very convincing wins over Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils.

It was the Kolkata bowlers who starred in the Indian capital on Monday night, with Morne Morkel (2 for 30), Piyush Chawla (2 for 27) and man-of-the-match Umesh Yadav (2 for 18) combining to keep the Daredevils to just 146.

Hyderabad must be particularly wary of Yadav and Morkel – both genuine pacemen whose combined tally of 12 IPL wickets at a strike rate of 13.5 makes them the most deadly fast bowling partnership in the competition.

The KKR batting stocks, however, are in much the same situation as their Sunrisers counterparts, with too many middling scores of 20 to 40 from the likes of Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan.

But then there is Gautum Gambhir, who has racked up three very impressive half-centuries in only four appearances. The Kolkata captain sits third in the IPL batting charts with 186 runs, having played one game fewer than both Ajinkya Rahane (231 runs) and Rohit Sharma (190 runs).

On the selection front, the only real question for the Knight Riders is whether Ryan ten Doeschate will keep his spot. With Shakib Al Hasan away on international duty for Bangladesh, veteran spinners Johan Botha and Brad Hogg would be the most likely candidates to replace the Dutch all-rounder.

On a sad note, KKR players will wear black armbands in honour of former Bengal U-19 captain Ankit Keshri, who died in hospital on Monday after suffering severe injuries in a horrific fielding accident.

Possible team selections

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul, Naman Ojha, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Karn Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Praveen Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dale Steyn

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautum Gambhir (C), Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Yusuf Pathan, Ryan ten Doeschate, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Sunil Narine, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav

Match predictions

ResultKolkata Knight Riders to win ($1.64 at Crown Bet)
Most match sixes – Sunrisers Hyderabad ($2.10 at Bet365)
Highest opening partnership – Sunrisers Hyderabad ($2.00 at Bet365.com)

Despite clear margins in the head-to-head betting, this is a tough one to call. Both sides are brimming with local and international talent, and Sunrisers’ form is nowhere near as poor as their win-loss record might suggest. We at MobileSportsBetting.com are leaning towards Kolkata on the back of their in-form bowling attack, but Hyderabad are well worth a look at $2.35 (Bodog.com).

In the match props markets, it’s hard to split the two sides on batting firepower. The lefty combo of Warner and Dhawan probably edges out Gambhir and Uthappa on combined form, and many online bookmakers have the Sunrisers pair as favourites for highest opening stand.

The hosts look reasonable value for most sixes, too. Top IPL betting sites Bet365, Bodog, Bovada and CrownBet all have the two sides at even odds, despite the fact Sunrisers (26 sixes) have cleared the fence with more frequency than KKR (20 sixes) in 2015.

Best IPL odds for top team batsman

Sunrisers Hyderabad – David Warner ($3.50 at Bet 365)

With two 50s in IPL 2015 so far and not a single score under 20, the captain is clearly the form player in the Sunrisers lineup. Those after meatier odds might also consider KL Rahul ($6.50 at Bovada) and Bopara ($6.00 at Bodog).

Kolkata Knight Riders – Gautum Gambhir ($3.50 at Bovada.com)

Like his opposite number, the KKR skipper is the standout choice based on early-season performances. There’s plenty of value down the order, though, in the likes of Manish Pandey ($5.50 at Bet365), Yusuf Pathan ($8.00 at Bodog) and perhaps even Andre Russell ($11.00 at Bovada).

Betting markets for top team bowler

Sunrisers Hyderabad – Dale Steyn ($4.00 at www.Bet365.com)

At $4 odds, the world’s top Test bowler is a very solid addition to your bet slip – if selected, that is. If Steyn doesn’t keep his spot, jump on Boult ($3.75 at Bet365) instead.

Kolkata Knight Riders – Umesh Yadav ($4.50 at Bet365)

The KKR bowling unit is in excellent touch as a whole, but Yadav gets the nod here after claiming five IPL wickets in his last two matches. Morkel ($4.00 at Bet365.com) is also a solid choice.
