Kick-Off Time: Thursday, September 26th 2013 at 7:30pm ET

Watch: Live on ESPN

The Virginia Tech Hokies 3-1 (0-3-1 ATS) have stumbled to a slow start this season. They now have to travel to Bobby Dodd Stadium to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 3-0 (3-0 ATS) on Thursday night. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN.

Hokies vs. Yellow Jackets Betting Lines

Virginia Tech is a +7 point underdog on the road against Georgia Tech and some shops have already moved to +7.5 points. The total is only 41.5 points, which is low for a college football game, especially when you have the #10 scoring offense playing in the game.

What Is Wrong With the V-Tech Offense

The Hokies weren’t expected to be a great offense this season, but they should be playing better than they have been. Through four games this season the Hokies are averaging 180.8 PYPG (100th), 161 RYPG (75th), 24.8 PPG (87th) and 1.3 TOPG (39th) on offense.

Playing Alabama in week 1 was tough and the Hokies struggled to score 10 points. Since then the Hokies schedule has been weaker, but the offense hasn’t looked good the past two weeks. Last week it took triple overtime for V-Tech to beat Marshall (29-21).

Virginia Tech also was held to just 15 points against a fairly weak East Carolina team the week prior. Logan Thomas has completed just 48.5% of his pass attempts (5.21 Yards per Attempt). He has thrown only 4 TD passes and already has 6 INT’s.

Defensively the Hokies allow 165.3 PYPG (16th), 91.7 RYPG (14th) and 17.3 PPG (28th). The defense is one of the highest ranked units in the nation, but they’ll be tested against the Yellow Jackets. This is the first conference game for the Hokies this season.

Can G-Tech Continue Their Dominance in the ACC

Georgia Tech rolled through Elon 70-0 before beginning their conference schedule. The Yellow Jackets are already 2-0 in the ACC, as they’ve beaten Duke (38-14) and North Carolina (28-20). A win this week would help immensely in their bid for the ACC Coastal title.

The Yellow Jackets won’t be a threat through the air (139.3 PYPG – 115th), but their rushing attack (345.3 RYPG – 3rd) is going to be a huge test for this Hokies defense. V-Tech held Bama to 96 rushing yards, but stopping the G-Tech option read is much tougher.

In four football games G-Tech has rushed the football 181 times for 1036 rushing yards and 10 TD’s. The team already has 3 players (David Sims, Robert Godhigh & Vad Lee) that have rushed for 100+ yards and a total of 8 players have rushed for 50+ yards.

One area where the Yellow Jackets have surprised teams is in the red zone. Vad Lee has already thrown for 7 TD’s compared to just 1 INT and that’s because the pass game is used very sparingly and defenses are always expecting G-Tech to run the football.

Usually G-Tech has trouble defensively, but this year’s team has been playing excellent. Georgia Tech has allowed opposing teams to average just 116.5 RYPG (27th), 170 PYPG (70th) and 11.3 PPG (12th). The defense has been a bigger surprise than the offense thus far.

Yellow Jackets vs. Hokies Best Bets

I’m betting on the point spread and over/under market in this Thursday match-up. V-Tech has a stellar defense, but G-Tech is able to wear down defenses with the amount of times they rush the football each game. It’s also tough to stop the spread option attack.

Virginia Tech has had trouble moving the football, but there are weaknesses in the secondary. Logan Thomas will have to have a big game through the air to keep this game close. That’s a good thing, as V-Tech should have some success through the air.

Thomas is also prone to INT’s and this G-Tech defense has the potential to set-up short fields or even score points with their defense in this match-up. With this game being in Atlanta I also expect G-Tech to run away with this football game in the 4th quarter.

V-Tech is going to have a tired defense by the 4th quarter and G-Tech has plenty of depth that can run the football. I think the final score in this game will be in the range of 35-21 for the Yellow Jackets and they’ll move to 3-0 in conference play this season.
