The 2019-20 college football season gets underway this Saturday with a doubleheader. Four teams are in action this week, but this Florida vs. Miami (FL) match-up is the one to watch.

The Gators finished last season with a 10-3 record after crushing Michigan (41-15) in the Peach Bowl and they’ll look to contend with Georgia in the SEC East to earn a spot in the SEC Championship.

The Hurricanes struggled last season and finished with a 7-6 record after losing to Wisconsin (35-3) in the Pinstripe Bowl. Mark Richt retired after the season and has been replaced by Manny Diaz.

Diaz has his hands full in Coral Gables as he transitions from defensive coordinator to head coach. For one, he has decided to start Jarren Williams, a redshirt freshman QB.

While the Hurricanes are looking to get back on track in 2019, the Gators have big expectations and it all starts in what many are calling a must-win game to prove last season wasn’t a fluke.

Dan Mullen has the luxury of a lot of returnees, especially at the skill positions. If Feleipe Franks can take another step forward after posting a 24/6 TD/INT ratio last season, the Gators will win games.

Why the Gators vs. Hurricanes Will Go Over the Total

Gators Betting 2019The over/under opened at 50 points and is now sitting at 47 points. That’s a big move down, despite action being relatively split. There’s definitely value betting on over 47 points (-115) in this one.

I’ve seen a lot of talk about how the Florida-Miami football rivalry has produced low-scoring games in recent meetings, but the last time these two teams played each other was back in 2013.

This total has been pushed too low. Florida’s offense averaged 35 PPG (20th) last season. They bring back almost all of the skill position players from last season as well.

Lamical Perine and Dameon Pierce are both back at RB. They both had 100+ carries last season and combined for just over 1600 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs.

Miami only has six returnees on the defensive side, which is a major concern. The linebackers unit features three seniors that will need to hold together the inexperienced defense.

That’s going to be tough against an offense that improved dramatically last season. If Florida’s RB duo get the chains moving early, Franks can start attacking the secondary on play action.

Despite not playing each other often anymore, Florida would love to beat up on the Hurricanes, as Miami have won seven of the last eight H2H games dating back to the 1986 season.

Both of these teams were strong defensively last season, which is why a lot of people are predicting the total to go under. Florida allowed 20 PPG (20th) and Miami allowed 19.5 PPG (18th) last season.

However, as I mentioned, the Hurricanes lost a lot of starters on defense. Florida made big strides on defense last year, but they lost talent as well, including leading sacker Jachai Polite.

With redshirt freshman Williams getting the nod at QB, it makes this game a bit more unpredictable, as we don’t know if he’ll come out playing like he has nothing to lose or playing conservatively.

However, if the Gators get up a couple TDs early, the Hurricanes will be forced to open it up. That’ll likely lead to turnovers and short fields for the Gators offense throughout the game.

I also expect the Hurricanes to be able to score some points. The Gators defense is good, but this is a tough rivalry game on a neutral field against a team filled with promising recruits.

Florida Gators vs. Miami Hurricanes ATS Prediction

I can’t see the Gators losing the opener against an inferior Hurricanes team. There’s no value on the Gators money line (-280), but I’m betting on the Gators to cover ATS.

The hook makes it tougher to place this wager, as it often comes back to kill you, but I also can only see this point spread increasing throughout the week as more action gets put down on Florida.

The Gators finished last season on an 8-3 ATS streak. The Gators are also 5-2 ATS in their last seven games when favored. Look for the Hurricanes to hang around early before Florida opens it up.
