Predictions for the 2012 F1 European Grand Prix

The 2012 F1 season has been difficult to predict. We’ve now had a total of 7 races and there have been 7 different winners with Lewis Hamilton finally picking up his first win earlier this month in Canada. F1 is in Spain for the week and Hamilton is favoured against the rest of the field again. Last year Hamilton finished 5th at this track and I don’t think he’ll win this week.

In fact if the odds continue to shorten I may lay Hamilton at Betfair this weekend. After winning a race this season the winning driver hasn’t finished on the podium in the next race. This may prove to be a profitable trade angle this weekend again. Alonso and Vettel are two drivers that are also expected to do well this weekend at the Valencia Street Circuit.

Last year Alonso finished in 2nd place in this race, but he hasn’t won the European Grand Prix since 2007, but in 2007 the race was held at Nurburgring. Alonso should fight for the podium this weekend, but he’s not my prediction to win. Vettel has been great at the European Grand Prix the past two years, as he has won the race in 2010 and 2011.

I’m surprised that Vettel isn’t the favourite heading into qualifying this week, but he has been struggling since winning earlier in the season at Bahrain. Vettel hasn’t found the podium in his L3 races (6th, 4th & 4th), but I think we’re getting value on Vettel due to his recent form and he’s my pick for this weekend’s race.

Williams has been struggling the past couple races as well, but they’re confident that their FW34 is suited for this track due to the number of corners. Right now you can back Maldonado in the T6 market at 3.75 odds and you can back Senna at 8.00 right now in the F1 T6 betting market at Paddy Power Mobile.

My best bet in the T6 market is Mark Webber this weekend at 1.83 odds. Mark Webber finished in 3rd last year in this race and he has been fairly consistent this year. Webber has 5 T6 finishes in 7 races this year including a win in Monaco. Webber finished 7th in Canada and I think he’ll get back into the T6 in Europe this weekend.

• Sebastian Vettel to win at 5.00 (4/1)

• Mark Webber T6 at 1.83 (5/6)
