Eagles vs. Raiders Over/Under Betting

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Oakland Raiders Week 9 Preview

When: Sunday, November 3rd 2013 at 4:05pm ET
Where: O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California
Watch: Live on FOX

The Oakland Raiders (3-4) are playing good football, but they stand no shot at making the playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles (3-5) are sitting in 2nd place in the wide-open NFC East, but if they don’t start playing better they’ll find themselves out of the playoff race.

Game Total in the Eagles vs. Raiders Match-Up

The over/under opened up at 45 points in this game and has been knocked down to 44.5 points at most betting shops. So far there has been more action on the over (75%) and I’m surprised that the total is dropping based on the one-sided action we’ve seen.

Why I’m Betting the Under in PHI @ OAK

Neither of these two teams is scoring many points and I find it unlikely that these teams will breakout offensively this week. Once Michael Vick went down with an injury it became painfully obvious that the Chip Kelly offense wouldn’t succeed with Nick Foles.

Nick Foles has played well when he has gotten playing time, as he has completed 57.8% of his passes (52/90) for 622 yards, 6 TD’s and 0 INT’s. His QBR is 101.2 while Vick’s is 86.5, but the problem with Foles is that he isn’t a dual-threat QB that can run.

Vick was averaging 9.1 yards per carry and had 308 yards (2 TD’s) before he got injured. He was able to run the option with McCoy and then beat defenses with the play action pass. McCoy started the season great, but in his L2 games he has 103 yards and 0 TD’s.

Oakland has surprisingly been solid at stopping the run this season, as they only allow 89.9 RYPG (6th). The Raiders are also allowing 241 PYPG (17th) and 21.4 PPG (12th). Foles will be under pressure to beat this secondary, as Oakland should shutdown the run game.

Foles will have to contend with Lamarr Houston, Jason Hunter, Sio Moore and numerous other players on the Raiders who will be looking to pressure the QB. The Raiders average 3 sacks per game (11th) and they should get to Foles, as Philly has allowed 23 sacks.

I didn’t expect too much from Terrelle Pryor this season, so I feel he has been playing fairly well. He isn’t going to beat you through the air, which is why the Raiders only average 176 PYPG (32nd), but he leads the team in rushing yards (391) on 53 carries.

Darren McFadden has 340 rushing yards (4 TD’s) on 93 carries. Between the two of them they’ve helped Oakland have one of the top rush offenses in the league (138.9 RYPG – 5th), but the Eagles have a strong front seven that give up just 99.5 RYPG (9th).

The Raiders will pound the football a lot in this game even though they’re unlikely to gain many yards because they won’t want to lose the game because of mistakes. Pryor has 7 INT’s on the season compared to 5 passing TD’s, but Oakland has managed him well.

Eagles vs. Raiders O/U Prediction

I recommend waiting to bet this total, as it’s still early in the week. With ¾ of the action on the over this total should head back up to at least 45 points, which would allow for a push if we end up close although I don’t think these two teams will combined for 40.

The Eagles have gone over the total in 5 of 8 games this season including all 4 of their road games. However, in their last 2 games the offense has only combined to score 10 points and both games have gone under. Oakland has gone under in 6 of 7 games this year.

Oakland has also gone under the total in their last 8 home games dating back to last season. I expect this game to play out similar to how the Eagles vs. Giants played out last week. There will be a lot of FG’s and the Eagles will struggle to move the football.

I’m not betting the Raiders on the point spread although I do like them to cover at home and have them in my weekly pool. I don’t want to bet Oakland simply because they’re the biggest public bet this week ATS and that usually never turns out good.
