Not exactly a savory showdown for Monday Night Football, there are still a few things on the line when these teams square off in the Meadowlands. The Indianapolis Colts have struggled this season, but still have a division title within reach. They’re only a game behind the division-leading Houston Texans.

The New York Jets are simply picking up the pieces from a miserable campaign, and it will be interesting to see the direction they take.

Colts Look for a Bounce Back

Indianapolis are coming off a 28-7 home scalding at the hands of Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving night, a game in which they were missing their franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck. He missed the short-week game after being knocked whammy in the previous week’s win over Tennessee. It appears Luck has passed all of his concussion exams, though, and is expected to return to action.

They’ll need him. The Colts are one of the worst rushing teams in the league, despite having a stalwart runner in Frank Gore. He’s had only one 100-plus rushing performance this year, and his numbers have steadily slumped in the last three games.

Add that to the fact that the Colts are ranked 29th in the league in total defense, and all of the Colts hopes lie on the arm of Luck and in the hands of his receiving corps. Luck’s season has been steady, with 283 yards a game, 19 total touchdowns and eight interceptions. His top receiver, T.Y. Hilton (942 yds., 5 TDs), went out with an aching back in the Thanksgiving game, and he did not take practice early in the week. He was listed as questionable.

Jets Need a Purpose

The Jets are coming off 22-17 home loss to New England, their third straight defeat. At this point in their paltry campaign, it is hard to see what they are playing for, other than pride.

There are murmurs about the future of Coach Todd Bowles. In turn, Bowles is not committed to starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitz has had the kind of season that makes you think a 3-8 team would look forward to next year. His passer rating of 67.6 is the lowest in the league, with 10 TDs and 13 picks. Second-year man Bryce Petty is waiting in the wings. He was 19 of 32 with a TD and an interception vs. the Rams when Fitzpatrick was injured earlier this year.

The Jets haven’t taken full advantage of another top-rated running back in Matt Forte. He has 759 yards this year but put up only 27 last week on 13 carries.

One little spark in all of this darkness has been the Jets defense. Ranked 12th in the league in total defense, the Jets allow RBs just 3.6 yards a carry, fifth in the league. But that stout defensive line hasn’t pressured quarterbacks much, with just 19 sacks this year.

Why I’m Taking the Colts on the Moneyline vs Jets

There’s plenty to consider here. Despite having a big showdown with division leading Houston next week, I think the Colts will have their heads about them and take first things first. They need the win; if Houston loses to the Packers this week, the Colts could win and set themselves up to overtake the Texans in the division next week. With Luck back in the fold, they should get the job done. Their 2-3 road record may not point to a win, but they were in two of those road losses down to the wire.

How the Jets approach things is another matter. If Bowles has chucked the season altogether and decides to go with a new QB, this game could deteriorate into something resembling a pre-season game. That’s why the over/under seems risky to me. It also makes the option of live betting more attractive, since we may not know who the Jets start until they actually take the field.

Though the Colts have a shaky defense and shortcomings in the ground game, they are the better team. I’m looking for Luck to be on track, Gore’s numbers to improve and the Colts to bounce back in this one. And since they are well rested from their Nov. 24 outing, I’d be willing to take the Colts as high as -140 on the money line and feel good about it.

That’s why I’m betting on the Colts moneyline against the Jets.
