Needing a victory and some help to claim the AFC West title, the Kansas City Chiefs meet their division rivals, the San Diego Chargers, in what could be the last NFL game at Qualcomm Stadium for the foreseeable future.

The Chiefs (11-4-0) currently are the top wild card in the conference, and finishing as the No. 5 seed would give them a first-round date at Houston against the Texans. But a victory, coupled with an Oakland Raiders loss at Denver, would not only give Kansas City the division crown but also a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Andy Reid’s team could also fall to the second wild-card spot with a loss and a victory by Miami over New England, which would result in a game at Pittsburgh next week.

Kansas City put together one of its most complete efforts of the season in a 33-10 rout of Denver that eliminated the reigning Super Bowl champion from playoff contention. Tyreek Hill had a 70-yard touchdown run and Alex Smith hooked up with Travis Kelce on an 80-yard scoring play as the Chiefs scored 21 first-quarter points and never looked back while rolling up a season-best 484 total yards.

The Chiefs are trying to run the table against their divisional foes and have won 10 straight against AFC West teams since a loss to Denver in Week 2 of the 2015 season. Kansas City has averaged 27.2 points in those games while limiting teams to 14.3 per contest and amassing a plus-7 turnover differential.

Three of those wins have come over San Diego (5-10), including a 33-27 overtime win to open this season. Smith rallied the Chiefs from a 17-point, fourth-quarter deficit and scored the winning touchdown with a two-yard run on the first possession of the extra period. Smith finished with 363 passing yards _ the second-highest total of his career _ and two TD passes.

KC at SD Over/Under AnalysisThe Chargers are playing out the string as they are going to finish with double digits in losses in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2000 and 2001. Team chairman Dean Spanos has a Jan. 15 deadline to decide if he will exercise the option to move the team to Los Angeles, something that looks more and more likely given the protracted negotiations the team has had in trying to make a deal with the city government of San Diego.

On the field, the Chargers have lost four straight and hit a nadir in losing 20-17 at previously winless Cleveland last weekend. Philip Rivers threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, but Josh Lambo missed a potential game-tying 45-yard field goal as time expired. He had a 32-yard attempt earlier in the quarter blocked as San Diego lost by six or fewer points for the sixth time this season.

Chargers should be”Ware” of Spencer

While Smith did an excellent job shredding San Diego’s defense in the season opener, running back Spencer Ware had a co-starring role. He created all sorts of mismatches, rushing for 70 yards on just 11 carries but also serving as a stellar check-down back to finish with seven catches for 129 yards — both of which are career highs. Ware has averaged 7.3 yards per carry in three games against San Diego, totaling 218 yards on just 30 rushes, and needs 79 yards to become the 10th player in franchise history to rush for 1,000 yards.

Chiefs vs. Chargers over/under prediction

For the second straight year, the Chargers are playing their last regular-season game at home with no idea where their future home will be. Last season, they responded with an emphatic victory over Miami, but this season, no one is certain what will happen on the field. But with San Diego struggling to put points on the board of late and Rivers having lost his last five starts against the Chiefs, I recommend taking the UNDER of 45 points established by the Bovada Sportsbook.

This is a game where the Chiefs will want to take care of business early — they’ll know by the opening kickoff if they’ll be the top wild card or not since Miami plays New England in the early games, and the chance to apply pressure to Oakland for the division title will be a great motivator to get things done. Expect a lot of Ware early, and Smith to exert his usual control on the game as Kansas City begins for another playoff adventure.
