Cardinals vs. Rams Betting Lines – NFL Week 15

Arizona Cardinals vs. St. Louis Rams Preview

When: Thursday, December 11th 2014 at 8:30pm ET
Where: Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri
Watch: NFL Network

The Arizona Cardinals 10-3 (9-4 ATS) snapped their losing streak with a win over the Chiefs (17-14). The St. Louis Rams 6-7 (7-6 ATS) have now won two in a row, but it’s a little late to make a push, as they’re in the toughest division in the NFL (NFC West).

Arizona is still in first place in the NFC West thanks in large part to a perfect 7-0 record at home. The Cardinals are only 3-3 in road games and the Rams will provide a tough test, but I have to admit that I’m surprised the Rams are favored to win this game.

St. Louis is only 3-3 at home, so it isn’t like they’re a really tough team to play at home. Arizona has a lot to play for still, as they’re trying to stay ahead of the Seahawks in the division. Both teams are banged up, but the Cardinals have much more depth.

ARI @ STL Stats at a Glance

Both of these teams are scoring a similar number of points, but the Cardinals offense has been struggling as of late due to injuries to Carson Palmer and Andre Ellington. Defensively, the Cardinals are a much stronger unit than the Rams and that’ll show this week.

Why I’m Betting on the Cardinals to Cover ATS

Arizona is in a great position to win the NFC West despite the injury setbacks they’ve suffered the past month on offense. This team has really stepped up their play on defense and they’re not playing like a team that’s about to blow their chance to win the division.

The Cardinals allow too many passing yards (263.3 PYPG – 27th), but they’re great against the run (92.1 RYPG – 6th). They tighten up once the opposing team enters the red zone as well. The Rams just don’t have the offense to score enough points against Arizona.

St. Louis is averaging 208.1 PYPG (26th) and 109.1 RYPG (18th) on offense this season. Those numbers have been getting better, but their two recent wins have come against the Raiders and Redskins. Look for the Rams to fall back to earth against a stingy defense.

Tre Mason has been playing well, but the Cardinals will be able to stop him with relative ease. Shaun Hill isn’t good enough to beat the Cardinals without a lot of help. The Chiefs were held scoreless in the 2H against Arizona and I expect the Rams to struggle also.

Arizona comes into this match-up averaging 245.5 PYPG (14th) and 79.8 RYPG (30th), but those numbers have been worsening now that their starting QB and RB are injured. This offense is now inexperienced and void of much talent, which is a big concern.

The Rams defense is above average in most categories. They allow 240.2 PYPG (15th) and 104.8 RYPG (10th). Those numbers improve at home and that means the Cardinals are in for a big test. Neither of these offenses are going to score many points on TNF.

Arizona Cardinals vs. St. Louis Rams Predictions

I may have picked differently if this point spread was where I figured I’d be, but that’s not the case. Arizona should be favored in my mind, so at +3.5 points I have to bet them. Even if they lose I can’t imagine them losing by more than a FG against St. Louis.

The Cardinals have won the last two H2H games including one earlier this season, but both wins were in Arizona. St. Louis has won the last two H2H meetings at Edward Jones Dome. This will be close and I always love taking the points in close match-ups.
