Bears vs. Packers Betting Lines

Matchup: Chicago Bears (7-7) at Green Bay Packers (13-1)
When: Week 16. Christmas Day, 2011. 8:25pm ET.
Television: NBC

First off – Merry Christmas everyone! Remember, the 2011 – 2012 NBA season starts today as well.

For Christmas Day NFL football, we’ve got a classic NFC North matchup with the Chicago Bears on the road to take on the Green Bay Packers. At 13-1, the Packers have the division locked up, while the Bears have an almost impossible path to the playoffs.

Being a home game for the Packers at Lambeau Field, everyone is predicting an easy Packers win. At the time this article is being written (Saturday, Dec. 24th at 10:30pm ET), the Packers are favored by 10.5 – 11 points at most mobile betting sites.

* Stupid Trivia Question of the Day: What Chicago Bears player is a direct descendent of Santa Claus? You heard me, Santa Claus. (Answer at the bottom of this page)

Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers Betting Lines

The Bears vs. Packers betting lines were posted late this week, but opened in the 12 to 13 point range. Right now, the point spread is down to 11.5 to 12 points at most books. It’ll be interesting to watch the line move as we get closer to game time, especially 4-5 hours before game time (as the sharp money starts to come in).

Like everyone, I’m expecting the Green Bay Packers to win this without too much trouble. Last week against the Kansas City Chiefs was a fluke, and I expect the Packers to get back on track against the Bears.

For the Bears, runningback Marion Barber is out with a calf injury. As of yesterday, WR Devin Hester and LB Lance Briggs are listed as questionable. Jay Cutler is still out, but he could be back for week 17 if the Bears have anything to play for. The Packers are looking healthy, and should be at full strength.

Bears at Packers Point Spread

Best Bears Point Spread: +13 (-110) at Bovada Sportsbook

Best Packers Point Spread: -12 (-110) at BetOnline Sportsbook

In the last three weeks, the Bears have scored 3, 10, and 14 respectively. Their defense was strong in weeks 13 & 14, but not as well in week 15 against the Seahawks. The offense also gave up 14 points on 2 pick-6’s. We have to figure the Packers good for a minimum of 24-27, even against this Bears defense. The key to the point spread could very well come down to how the Packers use their starters late in the game. If they’re taken out early, the Bears +12 points sounds pretty good. If not, I think the Packers will cover the spread.

My gut is telling me the Packers will be up by a couple of touchdowns headed into the 4th quarter. At this time of the season it’s always hard to predict how the best players will be used, but I think there’s an edge by assuming the Packers will remove some of their best players late in the game. If they do, the Bears could have a couple of good opportunities to close the gap.

I’m taking the Bears +13 (-110) at Bovada.lv

Packers vs. Bears Money Line

At the time of this writing, only BetOnline has their Packers vs. Bears money line odds posted. Right now (24 hours before game time), here are the latest money lines at BetOnline.

Chicago Bears Money Line: +475 at BetOnline

Green Bay Packers Money Line: -605 at BetOnline

I’ll be skipping the Bears vs. Packers money line bet because I don’t think the Bears have much of a chance playing in Green Bay. If this game were in Chicago, I’d be taking them as low as +400, but I hate this road matchup for them. At the same time, -605 on the Packers doesn’t sound good to me either. I don’t see value in either of these money lines, so I’m sticking to the point spread and over/under bets.

Bears at Packers Over/Under Odds

Here are the best Bears at Packers over/under odds at the time of this writing:

Best Over Odds: 42 (-110) at BetOnline or 42.5 (-105) at Bovada

Best Under Odds: 42 (-110) at BetOnline or 42.5 (-115) at Bovada

As you can see, you can give up a 1/2 point at Bovada but save 5 cents, or get 1/2 point on the under and pay 5 cents extra. Personally, I think this game will go over the total, and there are enough likely game scores that make 42 possible. So, I’ll pay the extra 5 cents and keep the 1/2 point I can get at BetOnline.com.

I’m taking the over, at 42 (-110) at BetOnline.com.

* Answer to Stupid Trivia Question of the Day: Injured Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler was born on April 29, 1983 in Santa Claus, IN. From there, he moved somewhere else, making him a direct descendent of Santa Claus.
