The Philadelphia Eagles 8-6 (7-7 ATS) and Chicago Bears 8-6 (4-8-2 ATS) both have their own fate in their hands. The Eagles are in the lead in the NFC East with Dallas close behind. The Bears are leading the NFC North although the Packers and Lions aren’t far behind.

Chicago Bears vs. Philadelphia Eagles Odds

Odds From Bovada Sportsbook.

Some shops opened this line at –4 or –5 in favor of the Eagles, but it has quickly settled at a FG point spread. I expect the spread to keep steady now. The over/under is up a ½ point from the opener total and I could see the line creep up another 1-2 points.

Will Jay Cutler Lead Chicago to the Playoffs

Jay Cutler was back last week and considering it was his first game back he played fine. He had some accuracy problems early on in the game, but he looked better as it went on. Cutler ended up completing 22/31 passes for 265 passing yards, 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s.

The Bears always seem to turn it on when it counts and during their 2-game winning streak they have scored 83 points. The defense is still allowing too many points, but it’s good to see the offense moving. Chicago is now ranked #2 in points scored (29 PPG).

Chicago’s offense is averaging 275.8 PYPG (5th) and 117.6 RYPG (13th). With Cutler back those numbers are likely to improve slightly as well. Philly just allowed 48 points against the Vikings and the defense now gives up 24.9 PPG (17th) and 402.4 YPG (30th).

The Eagles really struggle in the secondary (291.6 PYPG – 31st). Look for Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey to put up big numbers on the road this week. Between the two WR’s this year they have combined for 170 receptions, 2450 receiving yards and 17 TD’s.

Philly comes into this game with one of the best offenses in the NFL as well. The Eagles have scored 26 PPG (7th) thanks in large part to having the #1 rushing attack (152.9 RYPG). Nick Foles has also made Philly a threat in the pass game also (261.1 PYPG – 10th).

Defensively the Bears have done well against the pass (228 PYPG – 11th), but not against the rush (152.4 RYPG – 32nd). No team has given up as many rush yards as Chicago. Lesean McCoy should receive a lot of carries this week, especially if it’s snowing in Philly.

How the Bears Can Win This Game

Chicago needs to be able to establish their pass game early on and Cutler can’t afford to make mistakes. Catching up against a team like Cleveland isn’t too difficult, but the Eagles are much better than the Browns and Chicago can’t afford to go down early on.

The Eagles have a +9 turnover ratio and they’ve forced 26 turnovers (16 Interceptions & 10 Fumbles). After building a lead the Bears can fall back on Matt Forte to finish the business. Forte has quietly rushed for 1200 yards and 7 TD’s on 258 carries this season.

How the Eagles Can Win This Game

For the Eagles this game is pretty simple. I looked at the weather report and there is a 70% chance of storms on Sunday. Philadelphia has one of the best run games in the league and they’re going against the worst rush defense, so look for Philly to run a lot.

If the weather is bad it favors the Eagles because running in the snow/rain is easier than passing. Apart from McCoy needing to play well, the Eagles also need their defense to hang tough. They won’t win this game if they give up another 40+ points again.

Bears vs. Eagles Best Bets

I’m siding with the home team in this game and I’d jump on –3 while you can just in case we end up with a push. After watching the Eagles beat the Lions in the snow it’s hard to go against them. As the game went on McCoy ended up getting stronger and stronger.

Cutler is prone to making mistakes and will take some time to get back into rhythm. Both teams need to win, as they’re in very close races for their divisions right now. If the total wasn’t so high I’d also bet on the over, but at 56 points I’ll have to pass on the O/U.
