Kings XI Punjab – $2.40 at Bodog.com

Royal Challengers Bangalore will look to strengthen their top-four credentials on Wednesday when they host a Kings XI Punjab side with little left to play for.

After a slow start which saw them propping up the table for a while, RCB have turned in some very strong displays to become very much a factor in the 2015 Indian Premier League finals chase.

Virat Kohli and his men have lost just two of their last six fixtures, both of those defeats coming at the hands of first-placed Chennai Super Kings.

And Bangalore ought well be in the mix, too, with a squad containing the likes of Kohli, AB de Villiers and the force of nature that is Chris Gayle.

But by far the biggest factor in RCB’s revival has been the form of Mitchell Starc, who has taken 11 wickets in just five innings since returning to action late last month.

The Australian left-arm speedster boasts not only the best strike rate in the competition (one wicket every 9.8 balls), but also the best economy (5.8 runs per over) of any bowler who has taken at least one wicket.

Kings XI could only dream of getting that kind of service from Starc’s compatriot Mitchell Johnson, whose middle-of-the-road performances sum up where the Punjabi franchise is at right now.

KXIP are dead last in the 2015 IPL standings, having managed just two wins from their nine games to date.

That abysmal record includes a hat-trick of big defeats in their last three outings, the worst of which was a nine-wicket humiliation by the Delhi Daredevils – last year’s wooden spooners.

The biggest let-down for the Punjabi faithful has been the utter lack of reliability at the top of the order, especially when they have huge talents like Virender Sehwag, Murali Vijay, Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell to call upon.

There’s also a lack of real firepower in the bowling unit besides the oft erratic Johnson, while young all-rounder Axar Patel has performed admirably but without enough quality support in the spin department.

The net result of those shortcomings is that, with five games remaining in the IPL league phase, KXIP are all but making up the numbers and playing for pride.

That doesn’t mean they can’t influence how the playoffs shape up, however, and Bailey et al will at the very least be eager to drag themselves off the bottom rung of the ladder and regain some semblance of relevance.

Possible team selections

Nothing is ever quite a sure thing in the Indian Premier League T20, but this one isn’t too far off. While Bangalore still have a bit to do to match the frontrunners, they have more than enough in their armoury to put Kings XI in their place. RCB’s world-class core of Kohli, Gayle and de Villiers should sweep the match batting markets in the process.

IPL odds for top batsman

RCB – AB de Villiers ($4.00 at Bet365)

Kohli, Gayle, or de Villiers? That is the question. Gayle’s lingering back problems and Kohli’s slightly shorter odds ($3.75) leave AB as the most attractive option. We all know how good he is, while recent jaunts up the batting order (as high as first drop) make the South African superstar look an even more likely candidate.

KXIP – George Bailey ($6.50 at www.Bet365.com)

On recent form, it’s hard to pick anyone in the top three for Kings XI. Heck, which three will they even go with? The best form this year has come from the middle order, where Bailey leads his side’s runscoring despite batting as low as number six. Also check out Miller ($5.00), who performed well when promoted up the list last time out.

Value bets for top bowler

RCB – Mitchell Starc ($3.25 at Bet365)

Who else? Australia’s World Cup hero has picked up where he left off in the ODI arena, with a trio of three-wicket hauls in his five IPL innings thus far. Don’t even think about it – just back him in.

KXIP – Anureet Singh ($4.50 at www.Bet365)

The wickets have been evenly (and rather thinly) spread at Punjab this season, so it’s hard to choose a standout here. While Johnson ($4.00) is theoretically Kings XI’s most dangerous bowler, in practice it is Anureet who has done the most damage. It’s a very tricky betting market, though, as Axar ($4.50) and Sandeep ($4.00) are equally valid options.
