Alabama vs. LSU Point Spread Betting

#6 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. #19 LSU Tigers Preview

When: Saturday, November 8th 2014 at 8:00pm ET
Where: Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Watch: Live on CBS

Alabama 7-1 (2-6 ATS) has been a terrible bet against the spread all season. LSU 7-2 (6-2-1 ATS) has been underrated this season and has proven to be a great bet ATS. Will the Tigers be able to upset the Crimson Tide in Death Valley this Saturday?

There is no total out on this game yet, but that’s fine, as I’m betting on the point spread. Quite a bit of the sharp action has been on LSU to cover early this week, but that number will change once the public starts to bet on the Crimson Tide later this week.

Crimson Tide vs. Tigers Betting Preview

The Crimson Tide are still in the driver seat in the SEC West despite a loss to Ole Miss (23-17) earlier in the year. Right now the only remaining undefeated team in the SEC is Mississippi State and Bama plays them next week at home in what could be a huge game.

However, that game may not even matter if Alabama is unable to beat the Tigers in Death Valley this weekend. Bama has won three in a row against LSU and they’re 2-1 ATS in that time, but it wasn’t long ago when the Tigers were dominating the H2H series.

Bama has won three in a row since losing to Ole Miss, but the wins over Arkansas and Tennessee weren’t overly convincing. LSU is playing better football right now and they’ve also won three in a row, which includes a win over Ole Miss (10-7) last week.

There is no doubt that Bama is the better team. Alabama averages 36.5 PPG (19th) and allows 14.0 PPG (2nd). On offense they pick up an average of 290.3 PYPG (24th) and 218.6 RYPG (30th). I expect Bama to focus on the run game in this road game.

LSU is only allowing 15.9 PPG (4th) and 158.4 PYPG (4th), but they give up 159.7 RYPG (63rd). T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry will both look to wear down the LSU front seven on defense in this one, but Bama is unlikely to have success through the air.

The way the Tigers will cover is if they can establish their run game, but that’ll be difficult. LSU averages 225.7 RYPG (26th), but the Alabama defense is only giving up 78.1 RYPG (2nd). LSU will need to be creative to pick up big yards on this Bama defense.

If the Tigers can’t establish the run they’ll be in trouble, as they only gain 188.6 PYPG (101st). Bama is a bit weaker against the pass, but they still rank 28th in the nation (199.1 RYPG). LSU will need another strong defensive performance to win this one SU.

Players to Watch on Alabama & LSU

Bama will likely focus on the run game, but Cooper is next to unstoppable through the air. He won’t be targeted too often, but look for Blake Sims to find Cooper on at least one deep route. The pass game will open up after pounding the football.

Fournette has to have a big game or else LSU is in big trouble because they won’t beat Bama through the air only. Fournette has had some big games this season including last week where he gained 154 total yards on offense against a tough Ole Miss defense.

Crimson Tide vs. Tigers Picks

At just –6.5 points I’m going with Bama to cover this spread despite playing in hostile territory. Nick Saban is going to have his team ready to go and Bama has dominated this series the last two years. LSU may make it interesting, but they’ll lose by at least a TD.

Bama can stack the box and focus on shutting down the LSU run game that has struggled at times this season. I’m not even worried about the Tigers passing attack being good enough to consistently move the football downfield against the Bama secondary.

The Crimson Tide knows that if they win out they’ll win the crowded SEC West. They are going to look to throttle every team in their way. This team is playing great football right now and they have a very balanced offensive attack that LSU won’t be able to handle.
