49ers vs. Patriots Betting Lines

When: 8:30pm ET. Sunday, December 16th 2012
Where: Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts

The New England Patriots (10-3, 8-4-1 ATS) have already locked up the AFC East, and the San Francisco 49ers (9-3-1, 8-5 ATS) can win the NFC West if they beat the Pats. These are the top 2 teams in net points, and likely the best Sunday night matchup all season.

With several really good games this Sunday, I can’t wait for it all to get started. A quick rundown in case you haven’t seen the week 15 schedule; we’ve got Packers vs. Bears, Broncos vs. Ravens, Colts vs. Texans, and Giants vs. Falcons all starting at 1:00pm EST, then Steelers vs. Cowboys at 4:25, and this 49ers vs. Patriots game begins at 8:20pm. Get the beer & wings ready, this is gonna be a helluva Sunday.

With most of the good teams playing each other this week, we’ve got some huge stinkers too. If you’re looking to make some money, these games aren’t going to get much attention and there’s sure to be value out there. For now, lets look at the latest 49ers vs. Patriots betting lines.

Current SF vs. NE Betting Lines

The lines opened with the Patriots favored by -3 and the over/under at 48.5 points. At BetOnline, Bovada, JustBet, and just about everywhere else, the Patriots are now -4.5 point favorites and the over/under is down a full 2 points to 46.5. I like the Patriots to cover, and the over in this Sunday night matchup. There isn’t much variation in the odds at the best U.S. – friendly sportsbooks right now, but being the night game we should see more movement as we get closer to kickoff.

49ers vs. Patriots Week 15 Injury Report

The 49ers are very healthy with just Manningham missing practice this week. As of Saturday night he’s listed as doubtful, but everyone else on the injury report is listed as probable.

Gronkowski will miss the game again for NE, and 19 other Patriots players had limited practice and are listed as questionable for Sunday. Of course most of them will be playing, but probably not all of them. Follow this link to see the latest injury report for the Patriots.

Can the Patriots Make it 8 in a Row Against the 49ers?

New England is on a 7-game winning streak including a 42-14 obliteration of the Texans last week. They have the AFC East won already, but the Patriots will want to give it 100% against a playoff-bound 49ers team to keep building confidence, and to improve their playoff seed. Don’t expect the Patriots to play it safe in this one, they won’t be.

Tom Brady was on point last week (as usual), finishing the game 21/35 for 296 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. RB Stevan Ridley also rushed 18x for 72 yards and 1 TD. Both offensive starters were rested halfway through the 4th quarter due to the huge lead they had.

Bet on 49ers vs. Patriots – U.S. Friendly

Patriots Offense vs. 49ers Defense

These two teams are polar opposites. New England gets it done on offense while the 49ers typically get it done defensively. NE is in the T10 in both passing yards (285.8 PYPG – 5th) and rushing yards (139.9 RYPG – 7th) this season. The 49ers defense is #1 in points allowed, giving up just 14.2 PPG. The Patriots are by far the best scoring team in the NFL, with a ridiculous 36.3 PPG. That’s 7.5 more points per game than the #2 team in the league – really an insane statistic.

For the Pats to have success everyone will need to be clicking on offense like last week. Lloyd and Hernandez stepped up last week against the Texans, but the 49ers secondary ranks 2nd against the pass (184.7 PYPG). Brady can work in tight coverage, but his receivers will have to do their part.

Ridley and Vereen will also have their hands full against the 49ers 2nd ranked rushing defense (90.8 RYPG). SF has the best group of linebackers in the NFL and they’ve only allowed three 100+ yard rushers this season (Bradshaw, Lynch & Jackson).

49ers Rushing Offense vs. Patriots Rushing Defense

SF loves to run the football and they’ve got the 2nd best running unit in the league (161.5 RYPG). Having Kaepernick at QB gives the 49ers two running threats in the backfield every offensive play, as he’s very quick and can outrun most defensive linemen.

Frank Gore has already broken the 1000+ yard rushing mark this season, but he hasn’t rushed for 100+ since week 7. New England hasn’t been great defensively, but they’ve improved a lot the past few weeks and they now rank 8th against the run (100.8 RYPG).

San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots Best Bet

Bet the Patriots -4.5 (-110) at BetOnline.com

We know Brady, Ridley and the rest of the Patriots offense will put up points against almost any team. The main reason I like NE to cover the -4.5 pts is because their defense has been playing better and they can win this game for NE. FYI, the Patriots are 3-3 ATS at home this year. The 49ers are 4-2 ATS on the road.

If the defense stops Gore and Kaepernick from running wild I don’t think Kaepernick can beat the Pats downfield. NE needs to get off the field quickly when on defense, so that Brady has plenty of time to work his magic.

The main concern I have with betting the Pats is that they’ve struggled against top defenses. At the start of the year they lost to the Cardinals at home (20-18) and then in week 7 before their win streak they lost to the Seahawks on the road (24-23). They’ve been getting better though, so overall I feel good about this pick.
