49ers vs. Packers Spread, Money Line & Over/Under

What: San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers
When: 4:25 pm EST. Sunday, September 9, 2012
Where: Lambeau Field

The San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers will both be looking to improve on a successful 2011-12 season. This should be the best week 1 matchup, and the Packers come in as -5 point favorites at home.

The Packers must be disappointed with the way last season ended against the Giants, especially after a 15-1 regular season record. The Niners had an impressive 13-3 record, and both teams are looking for another shot at the Super Bowl this year.

49ers vs. Packers Betting Lines

The Green Bay Packers will have the advantage playing at Lambeau Field and they opened as a -5 point favorite (right where they are now). The over/under opened at 47 points and has only moved down slightly to 46.5 points.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco was 13-3 last season and one of the best bets against the point spread (11-3-2 ATS). The 49ers lost to the Giants (20-17) in OT in the NFC Championship Game last season, but they have high hopes again this year.

The 49ers bolstered their offense during the off-season, which was important. They ranked 29th in passing offense (172.7 PYPG), but they had one of the best rushing attacks (119.8 RYPG – 8th). The Niners also averaged 22.4 PPG (11th).

It’ll be interesting to see this new 49ers offense. They signed Mario Manningham, Randy Moss and Brandon Jacobs. They also drafted a couple rookies that should produce including LaMichael James and AJ Jenkins.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers were the best team during the regular season last year, with a huge 15-1 record. Unfortunately for them, they lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs to NYG. In the off-season the Packers addressed some of their defensive problems by drafting Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy and a few others.

Green Bay won games last season by outscoring their opponents through the passing game. Aaron Rodgers had huge numbers and the passing offense ranked 3rd in the NFL (289.3 PYPG). Green Bay also ranked 1st in points scored (32.9 PPG).

The 49ers defense ranked 1st at stopping the run, but 16th at stopping the pass. Rodgers should be able to find his main targets (Jennings & Nelson) with ease in week 1. It will be interesting to see if Cedric Benson is the answer at RB this season as well.

49ers vs. Packers Point Spread

If this game wasn’t at Lambeau I’d most likely pass on the game. However, the Packers were 8-0 (7-1 ATS) at home last season and they should cover the point spread of -5 points at home. I don’t think the 49ers will be able to keep up on offense, so I’m taking the Packers -5 (-110) at BetOnline.

Green Bay vs. SF Money Line

The best Packers vs. 49ers money lines are Packers -220 at BetOnline and 49ers +195 at Bovada.

I like the Packers SU in this game, but not for -220. If you like the 49ers, +195 looks pretty good to me. Once again, I don’t expect them to win this game, but their defense could keep it close enough to give them a shot (and crazy things happen in the NFL). If I weren’t taking the Packers on the spread I could be tempted into taking the 49ers money line of +195 at Bovada.

Packers vs. Niners Over/Under

The Packers vs. 49ers over/under has been moving up and down all week. Right now we can get 46.5 (-110) on either side at BetOnline. At Bovada, it’s 47 (-105) on the over, or 47 (-115) on the under.

I didn’t bet the over/under in this game, but I lean to the over simply because the Packers went over 7 of 8 games last season at Lambeau Field.
