NBA Playoffs First Round Series Winner Picks:

Los Angeles Lakers to Win the Series (-150)
Denver Nuggets to Win the Series (+115)
New York Knicks to Win Series (+110)

2021 NBA Playoffs First Round PreviewThe final game of the NBA’s play-in tournament is tonight. The Warriors host the Grizzlies tonight with the winner earning the #8 seed in the Western conference and a series against the Jazz.

Regardless of who wins tonight, the Jazz will be big favorites to advance to the second round.

There are several other first round NBA playoffs series with big favorites.

The Nets are -1300 to win their series against the Celtics, the 76ers are -1000 against the Wizards, the Clippers are -390 to eliminate the Mavs and the Bucks are -300 against the Heat.

None of these big favorites are worth betting on to win their opening round series. There’s no value.

However, there are three series I’m targeting in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Lakers vs. Suns Series Odds and Predictions

The #2 Phoenix Suns (51-21) are underdogs against the #7 Los Angeles Lakers (42-30).

Phoenix won the head-to-head regular season series (2-1). All of the games were decided by more than 10 points. The big question is will the Suns regular season success translate to the playoffs?

We know the Lakers are going to turn up the heat now that the playoffs are underway.

They’re coming off a big win against the Warriors (103-100) in the play-in tourney. LeBron James and Anthony Davis both scored 20+ points in the win. The Lakers have now won five games in a row.

Chris Paul has had struggles in the NBA playoffs and that’s unlikely to change. I’m sure the Suns are wishing they were playing anyone else. At these odds, the Lakers are too tough to pass up.

The numbers and trends may point towards the Suns as offering the best value, but you can bet that James and Davis will play monster minutes and I can’t imagine them losing in the first round.

Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets Series Odds and Predictions

This is going to be one of the most exciting first round NBA playoffs series.

The #3 Denver Nuggets (47-25) will take on the #6 Portland Trail Blazers (42-30). These teams played against each other three times this season and the Nuggets won the H2H series (2-1).

These two teams met in the 2019 NBA playoffs and Portland won the series in seven games (4-3).

You can expect offense in this series. Portland average 116.1 PPG (5th) and Denver average 115.1 PPG (8th). One edge the Nuggets will have is on defense, which will play a big role.

Portland are on an 8-2 run and are playing great, but Nikola Jokic won’t be stopped. Jokic is going to be the MVP and he comes into the playoffs nearly averaging a triple-double.

Another big factor in this series will be how productive the benches are. The Nuggets have a deep rotation and in a seven game series, keeping players fresh is going to be important.

Damian Lillard (28.8 PPG) and CJ McCollum (23.1 PPG) are going to get their points in this series, but the Trail Blazers, but they don’t have the same amount of depth as the Nuggets have now.

They have Aaron Gordon and Austin Rivers who will eat up minutes and produce.

Hawks vs. Knicks Series Odds and Predictions

The #4 New York Knicks (41-31) are gearing up for their series against the #5 Atlanta Hawks (41-31).

Both of these teams are playing well heading into the playoffs. Both teams are 7-3 in their last 10 games. The Knicks are on a three-game winning streak and the Hawks have won four games.

The Knicks won the regular season H2H series (3-0), though. Julius Randle led all scorers in each of the three H2H games. He’s averaging 24.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 6.0 APG this season.

He has become a star in New York and winning a playoff series would be massive.

Randle will get his, but RJ Barrett will need to step up in the playoffs as the #2 option. Derrick Rose could have a huge series as well if his minutes start to increase in the playoffs.

Trae Young will look to lead the Hawks to a playoff series win. Young is averaging 25.3 PPG and 9.4 APG. What the Hawks need to win this series is for their big men to step up.

John Collins and Clint Capela are playing well and the Hawks need them to produce. Young isn’t going to be able to do everything. With home court advantage, I’m betting on the NYK.
