We discussed 2020 NBA Championship futures in June, but now that rosters have been finalized we wanted to not only update the betting odds, but also our predictions to win each conference.

This is easily the most highly-anticipated NBA season in a long time.

Not only is the draft class exciting with Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and RJ Barrett, but now that the Warriors dynasty is over, the battle for the NBA Championship is wide open.

Let’s start out by taking a closer look at the top contenders in the East and West.

Predicting the 2020 NBA Eastern Conference Champion

Bucks Eastern Conference Winners 2020The Bucks are the class of the East. After finishing last regular season as the #1 seed with a 60-22 record, the Bucks bring back a similar roster led by Giannis Antekounmpo.

Malcolm Brogdon is in Indiana, but Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez and George Hill all resigned, while the Bucks also signed veterans Kyle Korver, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews.

Milwaukee were the highest scoring team during the regular season last year (118.1 PPG) and there’s no reason to believe that’ll change, as the new vets should make up for Brogdon’s lost production.

I expect the Bucks to have a great regular season and finish atop the East, but the playoffs are wide open with the 76ers (+210 to Win the East) and Celtics (+700 to Win the East) expected to contend.

I wouldn’t count out the Toronto Raptors (+1100 to Win the East) and you can bet on them at a great price. If they start the season on a winning streak you can expect these odds to shorten quickly.

Toronto lost Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, but they still have a lot of depth. Pascal Siakam was just signed to a max contract extension and he’s expected to take another step forward this year.

Fred VanVleet, Norman Powell and OG Anunoby will all be relied upon more heavily. While it’s not too likely, the Raps are capable of making a run in the playoffs and winning the East.

The 76ers lost Jimmy Butler and JJ Redick, but added Al Horford and Josh Richardson. If Ben Simmons can develop a shot the 76ers would provide a ton of competition for the Bucks.

Boston will be good, but I don’t think they have the roster to make the NBA Finals. Kyrie Irving is out and Kemba Walker is in at PG. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum both need to be more productive.

Predicting the 2020 NBA Western Conference Champion

Nuggets Western Conference Winners 2020The Clippers, Lakers, Rockets, Warriors and Jazz are all priced lower than the Nuggets to win the West. There’s a ton of value on the Nuggets who are coming off a #2 seed in the West (54-28).

Denver had a quiet off-season, but that’s not a bad thing. They added Jerami Grant who should fit right in, but this team revolves around Nikola Jokic who averaged 20.1 PPG, 10.8 RPG and 7.3 APG.

Jamal Murray and Gary Harris are a great young guard duo as well. I expect the offense to improve on last year’s 110.7 PPG and they already play great defense (106.7 PPG – 3rd in West).

The wild card on Denver is Michael Porter Jr. who missed his entire rookie season last year. If MPJ can live up to his hype this season the Nuggets could definitely make the NBA Finals. The West is going to be extremely tough and a number of teams could end up winning.

The Clippers (+210 to Win the West) and the Lakers (+250) are the two favorites in the West.

LAL traded away Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart, but they got Anthony Davis in return. The Lakers also signed Danny Green and Dwight Howard who are both expected to be starters.

Kyle Kuzma should take a step forward, but outside of him the Lakers lack depth. If Davis or James goes down with an injury that’ll kill any chance the Lakers have at winning a championship.

The Clippers made a huge splash by bringing in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, however, George is injured and will miss the start of the season. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Clips struggle a bit early.

Keeping Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell to come off the bench was a great move. Landry Shamet will need to develop further if the Clips expect to escape the tough West this season.

Will the Russell Westbrook and James Harden experiment work in Houston? The ex-teammates have been reunited and Chris Paul is gone, but the Rockets will likely find a way to lose in the playoffs.

I’m not sold on the Warriors either. Kevin Durant is gone and Klay Thompson could end up missing the entire season. Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and D’Angelo Russell will all need to step up.

The Warriors are likely going to make the playoffs barring anymore injuries, but Curry and Green will likely be exhausted by the time the playoffs roll around after carrying the team all season.
