2014 WCC Tournament Preview – Gonzaga or BYU?

2014 West Coast Conference Tournament Bracket & Analysis

Dates: Thursday, March 6th 2014 – Tuesday, March 11th 2014
Location: Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada

The West Coast Conference (WCC) tournament starts this Thursday and should keep everyone entertained until the big conferences start to duke it out in their conference tournaments. Most experts expect that #1 Gonzaga and #2 BYU will battle it out in the finals.

WCC Seeds & Schedule & Betting Lines

Betting Lines From Bovada Sportsbook!

The bottom four seeds will play on Thursday while the rest of the team will have a bye. Gonzaga plays the winner of Santa Clara / Pacific while BYU plays the winner of Portland / LMU. The #4 plays #5 and the #3 plays #6 as well in the second round.

I think Gonzaga has a great shot. They’ll win their opening match and then they only have to beat Saint Mary’s or Pepperdine to earn a spot in the finals. BYU will have a bit of a tougher run I expect, as San Francisco and San Diego are both scary match-ups.

What’s At Stake for Gonzaga & BYU?

There is a lot at stake for these two teams. Gonzaga is likely to make March Madness as long as they don’t slip up before the finals, but I think BYU has some work to do. Right now they’re a bubble team and they may need to win the WCC to guarantee their spot.

Who Will Win the 2014 WCC Tournament?

Let’s look at the top half of the bracket first. Gonzaga will have to play Pacific or Santa Clara. Neither will pose a threat, as Gonzaga has gone 4-0 against these teams this season and all of the wins have been double digits. This will be a nice warm-up for them.

Saint Mary’s is likely to beat Pepperdine. The Gaels are 2-0 this year against Pepperdine, but both games were close. The Gaels won at home by six points (80-74), but on the road it took overtime to win and the game ended with Saint Mary’s winning by two (69-67).

I don’t think it’ll matter who Gonzaga plays in the semi-finals because the Zags have dominated both teams this year. Gonzaga is 4-0 in the H2H meetings against SMC and Pepperdine. None of the games were even close, so the Zags should make the finals easily.

In the bottom half of the bracket Portland is likely to move on against LMU in the opening game. Portland is being touted by some as a surprise team to watch in this tournament, but I don’t see them being able to keep up on the scoreboard with BYU.

Portland plays a team game (38th in Assists) and scores a lot (67th in PPG), but the Cougars have an even better offense that ranks #3 in PPG, #7 in RPG and #13 APG. Portland did beat BYU in 3OT earlier this year, but the Cougars won the 2nd game (89-72) at home.

Some expect the Dons to struggle against San Diego in their game, but I don’t see that happening. The Dons are hot (Won 5 in a row) and they’re stronger offensively. I like the Dons and would love to see them make the dance, but they won’t beat the Cougars.

BYU is 2-0 against SF this season, but neither game was a blow out and both ended with single digits wins. The Dons will likely keep it close against the Cougars in the semi-finals, but they won’t be able to match the scoring of BYU unless they shoot the lights out.

The Bulldogs are one of the most efficient teams and they’re shooting nearly 50%, which is good for 6th in the nation. Gonzaga is 1-1 against BYU will both teams winning at home. I think the Zags have the edge in Vegas, as their fan base travels their often in force.

With no one in the WCC guaranteed a spot in March Madness yet this tournament will be entertaining to say the least. Gonzaga is the team to beat after earning the #1 seed and with so much on the line for this Zags team I like them to win the tourney.
