2014 BCS National Championship Futures Odds

The 2014 BCS National Championship Game will be played at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. This is the last year before the new playoff format is introduced during the 2014-15 season and the Alabama Crimson Tide will look to 3-peat and win the championship 4 out of the L5 years.

Alabama proved their dominance last year in the championship game against Notre Dame and despite losing lots of players to the NFL and graduation, Bama has amazing recruits coming into the program. Bama is favored to 3-peat, but several other teams will look to pull off the upset.

Will Alabama Be Able to Win 3rd Consecutive BCS National Championship?

Bama has built success through excellent defense first and then through a power offense. Last season the Crimson Tide ranked #2 in PPG allowed (10.7 PPG) and #1 in yards allowed (246 YPG). They should be a T3 defense again with their talent level.

Offensively, Alabama didn’t rank as good, but they were #15 in PPG scored (38.5 PPG) and #13 in rushing (224.62 RYPG). RB Lacy is now in the NFL and more pressure will be on RB Yeldon and QB McCarron this season to keep the offense rolling.

I expect Saban to utilize the passing game more, as McCarron is now a senior and has improved each season. He threw for 2933 passing yards, 30 TD’s and 3 INT’s last year and improved his rating from 147.3 (2012) to 175.3 (2013). He also has his WR’s back.

The areas of concern are the offensive and defensive line, as Bama needs to replace 3 players on both of their starting lines. The offensive line lost Warmack, Fluker and Jones while the biggest loss on the defensive line is nose guard Williams.

Alabama’s schedule isn’t that tough this season, but they have a few big games to worry about. In Bama’s 2nd game they have to play the Aggies at Kyle Field. The SEC schedule may be tougher than last year, but I doubt anyone except LSU will test them.

2013 College Football Championship Top Contenders

Last year noone would have guessed that the Ohio State Buckeyes were going to go undefeated, but this year sportsbooks have them listed as favorites in every game. They have a weak SOS and I expect them to run the table again in the Big Ten.

OSU ranked #19 in point scored (37.2 PPG) and #14 in rushing yards (242.25 RYPG) on offense last season. The backfield is loaded still with Hyde coming back and the offensive line is going to be amongst the best, so the run game should be in the T10 this year.

Offense won’t be a concern, but the defense is going to have some growing pains together after losing most starters from last year’s team. The offense will be better now that Meyer has implemented his system, but the defense can’t regress too much.

The other team I expect to go undefeated is the Oregon Ducks who have a very weak schedule that they should run through. At the end of the season the Ducks play on the road against Stanford, which is going to be their biggest test of the year.

Oregon ranked #26 in points allowed (22 PPG) and #2 in points scored (50.8 PPG). Oregon also ranked #5 in rushing (323.25 RYPG) and should have another T5 rushing attack. They lost RB Barner, but De’Anthony Thomas will take over the lead role fine.

The defense lost some of their best talent including Jordan, Clay and Alonso, but their SOS is fairly easy. Stanford is the toughest game, but that’s not until the end of the season. Oregon keeps missing the championship game, but this could be their year.

Prediction to Win the 2014 BCS National Championship

Saban has turned Alabama into a college football powerhouse. It’s easy to want to pick another team to win the championship, but Bama has the talent and the coach to get the job done. The SEC is going to be tough including the early game against A&M.

Manziel beat Bama last year and will be confident to derail Alabama’s season early at Kyle Field. I expect Cooper to continue to grow this season and he’ll have well over 1000 reception yards. McCarron will also throw for over 3000 yards and 30+ TD’s.

Defense and solid QB play wins championships and Alabama has both of those again this season. Yeldon has a lot a pressure on him, as the rest of the backfield is a question mark, but with the big bodies up front he shouldn’t have much of a problem.
