2013 NFL Regular Season Win Totals

In the last few years one of the most popular NFL futures bet is on the over/under regular season wins for a team. The odds for each team have been out for awhile now and we’ve seen some early movement on teams like the Patriots and Redskins.

I’ve posted the 2013 NFL regular season win total odds in the table below from Bovada and Bet365. The win totals are unlikely to change that much more before the start of the season unless something happens like the situation with Hernandez and the Patriots.

Best Over/Under NFL Regular Season Team Wins Bets

The Detroit Lions were 4-12 last season and lost their last 8 games of the regular season. I expect the Lions to improve on their 4-win season in 2012-13, but I feel that under 8 wins is a gift for a team with a tough schedule (SOS #2) and multiple question marks.

Detroit’s biggest signing this offseason was RB Reggie Bush who’ll take over RB1 duties for Mikel Leshoure. Bush had 227 carries for 986 rushing yards (4.3 Avg) and 6 TD’s with the Dolphins last year. Defenses will have to respect the run now in Detroit.

Last season the Lions were #3 in total yards on offense per game (408.8 YPG), but they only scored 23.2 PPG (17th). Stafford and Johnson both put up big yardage numbers, but TD production was down. Stafford threw for 20 TD’s and Johnson had 5 TD’s.

On defense the Lions ranked 14th against the pass (223.1 PYPG) and 16th against the run (118.1 RYPG), but they managed to allow 27.3 PPG (27th) during the 2012-13 regular season. Losing DE Cliff Avril will hurt, but they did draft DE Ziggy Ansah #5 in the draft.

Detroit is still going to struggle to score TD’s this season and the defense on paper isn’t going to be a T15 defense. The schedule is insane and features three NFC North division match-ups in the first five weeks of the season. I’ve posted the schedule below.

After the Lions bye week (Week #9) the schedule is extremely tough to finish the rest of the regular season. They have four road games against the Bears, Steelers, Eagles and Vikings as well as home games against the Bucs, Packers, Ravens and Giants.

I have the Lions going 5-11 this season and easily staying under their 2013 NFL regular season win total of O/U 8 wins. You have to pay -125 juice on this bet, but I feel that it’s the safest futures bet in this market. I’d be surprised to see Detroit finish above .500.

A lot of people seem to be down on the Colts this preseason, but I’m not one of them. Last season the Colts went 11-5 and made it to the NFL playoffs, but lost to the Ravens. This season the Colts have an easy schedule (SOS #30) and should pile up wins.

This is a young team with talent. Luck threw for 4374 passing yards, 23 TD’s and 18 INT’s in his rookie season. Luck also led Indy in rushing touchdowns (5). Vick Ballard only had 2 rushing TD’s, but gained an impressive 814 yards on 211 carries.

During the offseason the Colts signed WR Darrius Heyward-Bey who had 41 receptions for 606 yards and 5 TD’s. Reggie Wayne is back and young speedster T.Y. Hilton will help spread the field. Hilton caught 50 passes for 861 receiving yards and 7 TD’s.

Just this month the Colts came to terms and signed RB Ahmad Bradshaw. Last year with the Giants Bradshaw played 14 games and had 221 carries for 1015 rushing yards and 6 TD’s. Bradshaw is #1 on the depth chart, but expect Ballard to get carries still.

The defense didn’t put up solid numbers last season. The Colts defense allowed 236.8 PYPG (21st), 137.5 RYPG (29th) and 24.2 PPG (21st) during the regular season. The defense will look very different and it’s too early to say how they’re going to do.

Players like Erik Walden, LaRon Landry, Ricky Jean-Francois, Kelvin Sheppard and others will look to improve the defense. I think we’ll see the Colts rank around the same against the pass, but they’re going to be a much better team at stopping the run.

Indianapolis should start the season 2-0 with wins over the Raiders and Dolphins at home (Colts were 7-1 at home last season). In their next game they have a road test against the 49’ers, which I have them losing. I have Indy 4-3 heading into their bye week.

After a week 8 bye the Colts have three tough games against the Texans (2X) and the Bengals on the road. Even if they go 1-2 in these 3 games they’d be 5-5. They should win 5 out of 6 of their remaining games and they’ll do even better with good defense.
