Yesterday we analyzed the US Open Men’s bracket and today we’re going to look at the Women’s bracket. The big names are in the event on the women’s side of the bracket and that means the tennis should be very competitive. The opening round will be starting on Monday (August 27th 2012) and currently there is still some qualifying matches being played.

Can Anyone Beat Serena Williams at the 2012 US Open?

So far in 2012 we’ve had three different women win the grand slam tournaments. Azarenka won the Australian Open, Sharapova won the French Open and Serena won Wimbledon. Serena also won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympics. She won the gold in the singles tournament and the doubles tournament with her sister Venus.

Serena is only paying just above even money (2.10) to win the 2012 US Open outright. The odds don’t provide handicappers with any value and while Serena “should” win that doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee. Serena has won 3 US Open grand slam titles in her career with the last title coming in 2008. Clijsters won the US Open in 2009-2010 while Stosur won in 2011.

Williams has had a bit of a tough time on the hard courts in 2012, as her record is only 14-4. Serena has won once on hard courts this year in Stanford, but she also has several quarter-final finishes. Her recent form leads me to believe she’s ready for the last grand slam of the year, but at these odds you would want her hard court form to be better.

The world’s #1 Azarenka is sitting at 6.50 odds and is one of the co-favourites despite her recent injury concerns. Azarenka had to retire in the 2nd round at Montreal and she also missed the tournament in Cincinnati. The reason Victoria is still a favourite is because the hard court is her best surface (26-2 in 2012).

Azarenka is going to be motivated to win her 1st US Open title, but I question her health. I like being able to gauge form based on the hard court warm-up tournaments and she hasn’t been able to play in them except for 1 match in Montreal. Sharapova will be a better contender next week at Flushing Meadows than Azarenka.

Sharapova also missed out on the warm-up events, but her hard court form was great earlier in 2012. She is 16-3 on the surface in 2012 and as long as she’s mentally focused I like her chances to make it deep. How deep will depend on the draw, but if she can avoid Williams in the draw until the later rounds she should do fine.

Nobody else stands out from the field on the women’s side at the 2012 US Open. At the end of the day Williams has been electric in the 2nd half of 2012 and seems almost unstoppable at this point. My bet is on Sharapova to come through with a win, which she hasn’t been able to do at the US Open since she last won in 2006.

2012 US Open Tennis Women’s Champion Predictions

• Maria Sharapova E/W at 6.50: We know we’re going out on a slight limb here, but the key is looking for value. At 2.10 odds, Williams isn’t showing us the value we like, and we think Sharapova is a smarter bet.
